Good morning Northern California!

Waiting for reports on the sick chickens. I hope they made it through the night and are getting better!

I need to move chickens around. This time I am moving four from a grow out pen to the layer yard. there was some scuffling this morning but not too bad!

The OEs are moving out and all of the babies are moving up one towards the layer pen. Lots of cleaning and re arranging today.

Wish I could go fly a kite!

Congrats. I recently got a cabinet bator also (Dickey) and love it!! I am using my genesis to hatch cuz I wanna keep it clean.
cool

The sweet babes I got from Chickee yesterday :) yay!! My first chickens!
great photo. I got the other easter eggers from Candy. They are so cute
You know what might work for the sides is shade cloth. My husband made some panels to hang on the sides of my lower chicken pen. It has a roof, but the rain would blow in. When the weather is good I keep them rolled up and when it rains I can lower them like a shade. They let some air through for ventilation but keep the rain out.

yes this works great.
It does sound like Cocidiosis. Treat with Corid and make sure they all drink it. Dip their beaks into it if they you do not see them drinking.

Use 20% soluble powder
Mix 1/4 tsp per quart. Once mixed, it is good for 2 days
Give it to them as the only source of water for 5 days
Give them another course at half strength for another 5 days

Some breeds are more susceptible to Coci than others. Luckily they recover quickly. Yes, treat them all. The medicated feed does not cure it. It is supposed to allow them to build resistance.

Keep us posted!
that is what I did
Okay, here's the new toy..........

First the 80# box arrived. You can see the old setup, along with the brooder where the chicks spend their first week so I can watch them.

Got it set up!

A peek at the top shelf, you can't see it actually holds 7 rows of eggs.

I've already got all three shelves filled, with a half tray of overflow in the bottom that need hand turning.................(but one whole shelf locks down this next week).

wow.
Some are for me, some are for other people, some are for the freezer and I've had a feedstore contact me and want me to supply chicks to them.....

And I don't even want to get an accurate count, but probably in the 300 range.

I collect around 4 dozen eggs per day, plus quail.
that is a few eggs you got there

Ron do you have updated photos of your splash olive egger?

good morning everyone! feeling better today, hope it keeps up.
So sorry that you are going through this! The 13 chicks in my brooder went through this last week. One was too far gone and died before I realized what was happening. The chicks were all fine with no bloody poos when I went to bed and when I got up, the brooder was dotted with bloody poos with one obviously sick chick. I treated them with Sulmet because that is what I had. All have recovered and are doing fine now. I hope that your chicks all recover, too!
Sulmet and Corid do similar things, like asprin and advil. Sulmet gets used less in the comercial industry, so " commercial" bugs respond better to sulmet since they have less resistance.. I don't think it makes a difference for the backyard people, we don't have the same resistance problems.
My silkies are driving me crazy!! Are they ever not broody??? I have one that I gave some chicks too, and now the other one is broody too ( again). I think she laid 3 eggs before going broody again. There is no stopping them. The main issue is they scare all the other girls out of the nesting boxes. I've been finding random eggs everywhere. Under the coop, on a garden shelf, in a bag of pine shavings, even in a garbage can.

I moved one silkie broodie out of the laying box so there would be room for others to lay. her sitting had attracted a second girl and it was chaos. It turned out to be a bad idea, as soon as there was space I got another one, so now I have 3 girls sitting on eggs that are all different dates, its a mess but they a re happy. The remaining silkies have moved to the ACTUAL laying boxes where there is only room for 1 chicken in protest.
Hi Norcal friends :) Been crazy around here... A silkie chick with wry neck passed, my EE is better from her URI, but not laying yet. I got some Coturnix quail that are slowly laying & I'm just managing the different ages & cages :) I found an egg my leghorn laid today streaked with blood. Should I be concerned?? Also I'm looking for more quail to buy, but can't seem to find any locally. Anybody know of anybody with quail for sale?
was it a big egg? sometimes a big egg can cause issues. Id check her vent and see if it looks ok. Check your local craigslist if the places I listed before were not close enough. That's all the ones I know!

good MORNING! Hope your cheery attitude lasts all day!

If anyone was wondering, do not wear royal blue around Turkey toms. Apparently its a fighting color. i got bitten this morning when letting people out in my robe.

how many are using the electronic GQF hovabator? 1588?

I was planning on getting a R-COM But with more fencing coops and runs may be out of my range for now but I need a upgrade .My older one does ok but has a hard time holding steady temp. and humidity

I would think it was more of a protest that you were letting people out, he prefers his people penned up. :). Glad you're feeling better

I use 2 of the 1588s for incubating and hatch in a still air.

Jason I have three of them and was quite happy with them. I just wanted to upgrade to more features. More set it and forget it. We like to travel and it's harder to get away and convince my son to add water and monitor for me. With the new cabinet he can just add water to the humidity pump every few days. I'm going to use them now as hatchers. With three, I can sort anyone I need to keep track of the egg and obviously I'm good on staggered hatches.

Hi Chiqita!

It is good to hear from you.

More information on blood on the outside of an egg, form not too worry about to disgusting

1. New pullets or first eggs after winter. This is normal and not a problem.
2. Mites! Look into getting rid of the mites.
3. Vent Gleet is a yeast infection and can be cause by several factors. Mine probably got it from me not cleaning the auto water fountain often enough.

Definately look into the symptoms before treating. Pro biotics and Apple Cider Vinegar are good preventatives until you know for sure!

Mites and Vent Gleet have very clear to find symptoms.
