Quote: OK, so another just hatched, do I need to let him dry a bit or leave him in, move the dry ones out and getting the malpositioned egg at the same time?
Good luck with the malpositioned guy!

Here's a couple pics. First with some cuteness... the 8 happy chicks napping in my lap

And here's one of the grocery store chicks!

I have 2 grocery chicks so far with a third zipping. A fourth is pipped on the wrong side... Ack!

If he needs help, can someone please clarify the overall goal? Is it to remove shell only, the papery membrane, or all of the membranes??? I'm guessing it is to remove the shell and papery membranes for one half of the egg???
Move as little as possible and use a q tip to moisten stuck membranes. Get the head and top have free but leave the bottom alone. Put the chick back in the incubator with it still in the shell. You have to make sure the egg yolk is absorbed and the little umbilical type thing comes off on its own. You may need to wash the chick to get any stuck stuff off. I wait until the next day if I have to do that.

I do not have to very often with the Brinsea though.

Ok, I know I sound like a dummy....  but what are grocery store hatching eggs, and where do you get them?  My store doesn't sell hatching eggs....  lol    :idunno

Trader Joe's in both Roseville and Davis sell Fertile Eggs in the refrigerated egg section. For eating. But many of us (myself included) have incubated them and hatched chicks - White Leghorns. I did it as an eggsperiment. It's also a great way to test an incubator or just try for your first hatch in an incubator. Under three bucks for a dozen is much cheaper than ordering hatching eggs, especially if you're just looking for layers. White Leghorns lay white eggs, but they're excellent layers, so if you're looking for fresh eggs and you don't care if you have brown, green, blue, pink or other colors of eggs, it's an inexpensive method of building a flock.

Check the cartons for the "furthest away" Use By date. You want the freshest eggs. The date the carton was packed will be stamped as a three-digit Julian date. (1 is January 1st, 364 is December 31st in a non-Leap Year.)

I have had two upside-down chicks hatch without help. I didn't even know one was upside-down until it kicked the top of the shell off and its feet were sticking up in the air

Vet Tech might work. You would have to check to see how much of our current education will count towards the degree and then there is certificate training.

Good Luck!
my wife is a Licensed Vet Tech. She had to get a Degree in Animal Biology.
There are a few levels the best way to find out would be to probably contact a Vet practice and ask the Vet or maybe call Sierra College or Sac state.
My wife ended up doing all the classes to become a Vet but just decided at the last minute she did not want to go to Vet school at Davis after Sac state
and become a Vet Tech. She likes it

Some chicks are like Godzilla or the Hulk and can bust out of the shell!
