California - Northern

OH, and can I remove that white thing? It would sure make more room in there.

If you have the auto humidity pump you need to leave the paper in the hood. That is what the drops of water drip onto and control the humidity.

I usually wait until right after a chick has hatched (moisture from its body elevates the humidity) to open the incubator and take chicks out. This last hatch was so tight in my Octagon 20 (17 chicks) that I was opening it quite a bit and all of the eggs hatched but one. That is the nice thing about the Octagon 20 is that its temps and humidity recover quickly. I did have one chick that was not positioned right (head was not under its wing) and I ended up helping it out.

The proper position for a hatching chick is with its head "under" its "right" wing.

Good luck with the rest of your hatch! :D

Yes! Under the left wing and twisted upside down is bad.

Ok, chicks are all out of the incubator, much to the delight of my grandsons! I moistened the membrane and zipped the shell about 1/2 way around. The right wing is over its head but the head seams to be turned like its looking up. It's was kind of shrink wrapped so I broke through some of the membrane, no blood. I loosened him a bit, wet the membrane again and put him back. I kind of wish there was still some chicks in there to inspire him to move but he's not trying to get out. Now the membrane is going to dry again! What should I do?

The little Polish has a sticky back, the others are all from my Blue Copper Marans and my Ameraucana Roo.

my wife is a Licensed Vet Tech. She had to get a Degree in Animal Biology.
There are a few levels the best way to find out would be to probably contact a Vet practice and ask the Vet or maybe call Sierra College or Sac state.
My wife ended up doing all the classes to become a Vet but just decided at the last minute she did not want to go to Vet school at Davis after Sac state
and become a Vet Tech. She likes it
I was a vet tech also in my younger years. Loved it!
It was really nice meeting you Yesterday Jason

Hope you like your chicks and they are doing well. Remember to post lots of pictures!

Yes Candy was really nice meeting you as well. Chicks are doing great. I was going to post pictures but my wife is out taking photos today . ( Her other profession )

I will get some up.
Today I finished my covered runs completely. finished the grow up run ( just need a few more coops )
Now running out to plant more Bamboo...

Deb how is your Bamboo doing?

The sweet babes I got from Chickee yesterday :) yay!! My first chickens!
You should enter this in the Cutest Baby Fowl contest.
Okay, here's the new toy..........

First the 80# box arrived. You can see the old setup, along with the brooder where the chicks spend their first week so I can watch them.

Got it set up!

A peek at the top shelf, you can't see it actually holds 7 rows of eggs.

I've already got all three shelves filled, with a half tray of overflow in the bottom that need hand turning.................(but one whole shelf locks down this next week).

So cool! Someday, though my DH is not as accomodating to my hobby as yours. Maybe when the kids are grown and gone.

Beautiful, it never even wilted for a moment. I'd love to go get a few more clumps.

Once I started looking at them, he was constantly asking................"Have you ordered it yet????" He's a good hubby!

how many are using the electronic GQF hovabator? 1588?

I was planning on getting a R-COM But with more fencing coops and runs may be out of my range for now but I need a upgrade .My older one does ok but has a hard time holding steady temp. and humidity
HI Jason,

Are you talking about a still air or the Genisis? I used to have a still air and had lots of leg issues. I prefer the 1588 Genesis which works great! I would definitely get the genesis over the still air.

My experience with the RCom
I borrowed my frinds R-Com because everyone swore by them. Initially I was super impressed. The R-Com is super easy to program, but they down side is.... there is absolutely no insulation. We had a power outage when I was out running errands and when I got home I realized the power had been out for 2 hours. My HB was still at 88 degrees and the Rcom was at 62. Big difference. I had a 25% hatch from the Rcom and 85% hatch in the HB. The r-come is built like a toaster. It heats up and cools off really fast.

1 yushania anceps ( hardy clumper to 10-12 feet )

next week I have 1 more green panada and Yushania anceps to plant
plus Borinda Boliana ( Himalayan Blue bamboo )
My super rare mountain clumper that gets Blue culms. one of the tallest cold hardy clumpers

and 3 clumps of Black stripe Timber Bamboo ( this stuff runs and I need to choose spots wisely as I have areas that hold moisture and I do not want a forest. Though it makes awsome groves.)

oh and 2 magnolias a Japanese Lilac tree , noble fir irises and a few pines I grew from seed ( like I need more pine trees though
