I love my broodies. This will be a first for my Barnevelder hen though. She's the one that took 11 months to start laying, so I figured this would happen. (same thing happened to a welsummer, 11 months to start laying, she laid for 3 months, then went broody) She'll probably go broody AFTER my eggs hatch this weekend.

Anyone getting broodies yet?

I have a barnevelder hen that is plucking her belly, but she's not broody yet.
Yep, I have my first broody of the year, a young bantam buff Brahma. So tempting to put eggs under her

I am on the list for porcelain d'Anver eggs with Boggy Bottom Bantams, so maybe I should check in and see if they are available now

It was a busy weekend for me. I had to move slow because I pulled a muscle in my back on Friday. It is getting better but I do have to be careful.

I moved 3 Marraduna Basque and one SG Dorking X Ameracauna EE to the layer yard on Saturday night. Integration went very well with not too much fussing around going on. One of the Basque Hens even jumped in to get treats and no one knocked her away. They went into the big coop last night too so all is well with that move.

The OEs moved into the now cleaned grow out pen and they are doing ok too.

These are three of the 7 Cream Legbar X Crele Pene:

The new babies, Starting with the Blue Egg Layers moved up one in the Brooders.

FYI, make sure you put a little Oxine in the water when you put eggs in lockdown. The water can get pretty stinky fast. The oxine will keep bacteria from growing. I don't know where you can buy oxine locally. I order mine on line. I think the last bottle I bought was from Amazon. I have only seen it in gallon size but maybe you can find it in smaller bottles. A gallon lasts FOREVER!

Does anyone use anything other than Oxine in the water? Bleach, vinegar? Perhaps something that can be found in household arsenal.
Thank you! I didn't know that. I can get it from Amazon. That would be good, because I could use it to clean the brooder as well, right? What are some other first aid things it is good to keep around?

I think I saw someone mention using Apple Cider Vinegar in the incubator, too.

Sorry about your back! I am glad it is starting to feel better. That kind of injury can really get in the way (not to mention hurt!).

Such pretty chickens! I love the Barnie OE. Her feathers are amazing! The little splash baby is so cute. I'm really curious about it... I want to add some pretty blue egg layers at some point. What exactly is she? I like the look of her a little better than the Creme Legbars.

Quote: They are Blue Egg Layers from the University of Arkansas. It turns out that they were developed by a guy that keeps chickens for feathers - used to make fishing lures! He calls them Whiting Blues.

I contacted him and he only sells chickens in Colorado. They are reportedly going to be available via McMurray and Privet Hatcheries next year. Whiting has chipmunk, Blue and Splash of his blue egg layers. I have Blue and Splash. None of mine that I hatched are Black. I think the one in the picture is a pullet.

They have Pea combs so it is different but 2 of the blue ones have much larger combs. I might have 5 pullets and 2 cockerels from them. They are Araucana crossed with Leghorn.

Are you planning on breeding these, Ron? Or partnering with someone who can have roosters to breed them? If you are, please put me on the list for eggs/chicks!
