One thing to look into is feathers on the vent. There is no appendage on chickens, so feathers on the Rooster or the Hen often get into the way.(I hope that was family friendly enough).

Feathers that get in the way need to be trimmed or plucked.

Are you going to hatch eggs from him? I would wait until he has been with the hens for three weeks and do a test incubation. You can check the eggs for the doughnut where the embryo is too.

They're so good! I've only been into Photography since about September of last year, but it is really, really addicting. I just did a photoshoot with 4 dogs for Border Collie Rescue NC.

I am SO EXCITED to get my chickies, it'll be so fun to take pictures of them. So far I only have pictures of my friends chicks. I love the awkward stage where they're starting to get in all the their adult feathers...

Ron, I bought four of the plastic nesting boxes. I really like them. I can pull them off the wall and wash them.

Seriously! My goodness - half the time I just want to believe that if I let them do their thing they'll be fine (I mean eggs have been hatching for how many thousands/millions/trillions of years?) and the other half I'm hovering over the hygrometer dying inside because I don't know if the humidity is too high or too low or if I should keep the plug in or worry because them temp is 99.3. I can't imagine if these were expensive eggs!

I did candle three yesterday (I was worried about one of the store bought eggs, it had sappy areas coming out. Anyway, I scrapped that one (no veining, either) but the one next to it had a little tiny chickie fetus in it! It was kind of crazy how much I could see. It was one from Deann. So cool. I'm afraid once they get bigger they're going to give me (human)baby-fever. It reminds me of seeing the ultrasounds of my kids!

I never candle my own and still get good hatches. No issues with bad eggs

And day 21 isn't until 10 PM tomorrow! My little icelandic surprise egg from chiqita is going to hatch early! The hole is big and I can see its little beak sticking out! Huzzah!!!!

Should I leave some of the coop walls open as just hardware cloth? It gets HOT here, triple digits in the summer. But doesn't usually get below freezing in winter.

Yes on the north side. Baking in the summer and soggy winter conditions are worse the heat and cold

A "California" Coop is closed on three side with the North side open and covered with hardware cloth and a roof that stick out to catch the rain. There should also be vents at the top.

Ventilation is very important and keeping them out of the wind in the winter is important as well. You do not need insulation. Chickens are their own little insulators...

I was thinking of you today when I opened a box of Fertile eggs! You could teach some sellers a thing or two.

Look at what I got today:

Shipped in a small box and the eggs placed in the box inside a cut up foam egg carton:




The eggs on the inside of the carton are wrapped in tissue:





Enough of that!

You should have an easier time hatching the Marans eggs. They are crossed with Little Pedler so the will not have the hatching problems from the US Marans. Those are too inbred to hatch well in most cases.

Good thing this is the CA North thread. Others wouldn't believe the California Coop under snow picture.

I candeled today, 19 still going strong, they go into lockdown when we get back from Red Bluff.

The last two bathes went well today, the one I thought would give us the most problem fell asleep in DD's arms while I Dremeled his toenails, go figure.

Well it looks like we are yet again downsizing and will be renting our home and moving.

I'll have my entire flock available for purchase in addition to the new chicks I have just gotten...red orpingtons & swedish flower hens from greenfire and Barnevelders - a mix of blue, buff & regular
