I could really use some advice. This little one had a really hard time coming out of the egg, and in fact I had to help it a bit by by helping peel the membrane away but not cutting it. It can't hold itself upright and the toes are curved, I don't know what to do about it. It's been out of the egg since about noon. Any advice would be welcomed.

The rest of the hatch is going well, including this little one 21 have hatched and 3 more have active pips. Mind you this is my first hatch with a batch of 28 eggs to start, all in a Little Giant still air incubator! Also 12 hatchlings have already gone home with a friend of mine and she'll probably take more once the hatching is done.

Quote: Boy, I second the Poly-Vi-Sol! I've never used it before but I had two weaker chicks, the last two to hatch. They seemed like everything was fine except they just couldn't keep up with everyone else so after all the others sold I picked up some PVS but with Easter and all didn't get the chance to give it to one before it died and the other weak one was down, doing the hard breathing. I gave it some PVS but didn't hold out any hope. I even called one the people who bought chicks and asked if she'd take the OE I had saved for myself when the other chick died. This morning she was up running around with the other. Tonight she's got a full belly and you'd never know she was on her death bed yesterday. I am really surprised and pleased.
A nice picture of my favorite blue hen's lacing:)

Trisha
Really beautiful lacing. Wow!
Quote: I bought a FBCM on Saturday from debs_flock. I put him in our garden area to quarentine. What's interesting is that my other roo has not brought his girls even close to him. They're about 80 feet apart and can hear each other and on a normal day, the flock works their way down by the house but at the least on the pasture between the barn and the garden which is next to the house but instead my roo has taken them to the back side of the property where I've never seen them go. The poor FBCM is so lonely he follows the puppy wherever she goes around his fencing. How long does he have to be lonely? Poor guys best friend is a bird dog....it's just not right!

I wish I'd learn to delete....I have over 3,000 pictures on my iphone...mostly chickens and grandkids! I put them on my computer and up in the cloud but can't seem to trust it enough to delete the pictures on the iphone.

Congratulations on the hatch!

Give it a drop of baby vitamins without iron or save a chick in water.

For the toes, straighten them and stick them straight into a bandage.

About 50% will not make it when they are like this so expect the worst but hope for the best

Cool! Never been to that event before, I bought some heirlooms from a lady in Lodi last year though.

So I've heard of people plucking or trimming orpington butts to get better fertility. Doesn't it hurt the girl to pluck her feathers out?!
I pluck the feathers on top of the vent for girls adn bottom for boys on my silkies. They don't react, but I do a few at a time. Supposedly trimming can put the boys off if they are getting poked all teh time.

You want to fix those toes and feet. Are his feet all the way under him? I cant tell. Loo it up here on BYC, there are some great articals with pictures. You are flattening them out straight with room between them and trying to get him to stand on him. If he also has splay leg ( cant tell) use a hobble or cup. If its just the feet and spraddle its fixable and will live a long and happy life. I give them a day to see if its getting better on its own, sometimes they jsut right themselves.

Ok off to work and to see deerling today.

Hope it dosnt rain TOO much down there...

Did the report come back yet?

How is your pullet doing?
Thanks for asking! She's still fluffed up, but rowdy as ever. Very calm when held. I keep thinking I see other Buff Orpintons losing their necks, but so far I don't think any have hunched up the way she does. Haven't got the results back yet, she said to call Monday if I haven't heard. I gave the flock some yogurt and bought probiotics, but it didn't come with the 10 gram scoop it was supposed to, so they haven't had any yet.

I noticed she carries one of her wings a little lower than the other and was thinking maybe she hurt it somehow and that's why she was puffed up? But she'll use them both to fly so I doubt that's the case. I have heard a few sneezes (like one or two a day from the entire flock, if that) is that normal, or are chicken sneezes always bad? And I say sneeze, but it's really more like a little sniff.

Oops, chicken accident!
I called Higby's about 6 or 7 weeks back and talked about ordering Quail d'Anvers, but in the end decided not to because I found Sebrights available immediately (and I have been working part-time now and will be working full-time in the near future, and wanted something quickly so that I could spend as much time as possible with my chicks while they were little). Well apparently Higby's, without calling me, ordered the d'Anvers. So they called me this morning to say that they have 12 d'Anvers chicks waiting for me. What!?
If anyone in NorCal wants a few of these little guys, please give them a good home. I'm debating whether or not to go and get 2, although I already have the 4 6-week old Sebrights (and 1 is a roo that needs rehoming)! I guess chickens really are addictive...
