Wow! They are super, super cute!!
I am in Southern California but I have a lot of family in the North. To me northern Cali is above San Fran.
I have family all over ....Hydesville, Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville then on over to Redding.
I am really a Northern Cali girl at heart![]()

Quote: I'm with you guys (and the other people in this thread) about being concerned about what's in manufactured food. In my last house I had a garden and I can't explain the level of satisfaction I had on the days I could gather all our salad ingredients from the yard! I believe it is more than just the quality of food that we lack in our society, there is something spiritual for me to be able to consume the food you personally grow. Am I being too idealistic here??? When I was a child visiting Europe I remember every postage stamp of a yard had a vegetable garden. I think they have the right idea over our manicured non-edible landscapes. Ok, I will get off my soapbox now...
My favorite "grocery" shopping is grabbing a glass of wine and walking the garden to see what we're going to have for dinner. We've only done summer gardens but hope to work on year around. We added lettuce a few years ago and now always have it growing. Now I plant it in a barrel on my deck so I can just go out and get what I need for dinner. The difference if grocery store lettuce to home grown is as much as tomatoes! Once of my favorite uses for lettuce is to replace the taco shells with lettuce. They don't fall apart and cut a zillion calories out...and I love my traditional tacos!
Quote: OK, I had that up on my tabs so you must have answered my question the first time! Thanks again!
I think that people are using the ovation system inappropriately - not the way that it was intended.
People are using it similar to the "Like" button on Facebook, giving thumbs up when they like the post. From the way that I read the intention, the thumbs up should be reserved for posts that are more than that.
Quote:I really was joking when I posted and I really don't check the ovations. When they first added them I was thrilled for the "like" button but soon learned that it was for helpful posts as you mention here so I quit using it, although I should use it for what it's intended for. It does catch my eye when I'm skimming and look closer at a post to see if it's information I should know but sometimes it's someone who "likes" the post more then it being informational. I think it's good to post a reminder now and then of the purpose of that particular feature. I do wish we had a "like" button though. So, the way that I understand it, the thumbs up is for posts that are informational - educational - posts that would be helpful to all or most BYCers.
The way that it's being used is more like a popularity contest. I understand Pam's reaction because I had the same feeling when the ovations first started. I purposely was trying to find people who needed help and would answer them, trying to resolve their issue. Then I would check the ovations the next day. I got frustrated when I saw that the popular BYC members were getting ovations for whatever it was they posted that day. It didn't seem to matter whether it was helpful or not. Some were even snide or political. What seemed to matter wasn't what was being said but who said it. I soon stopped looking at the most ovations list. I have to admit, I got the most ovations for my lamb picture and I was so happy to finally get some ovations. But, again, that's not what the ovations are supposed to be about.
Happy Chooks or any moderator, am I off base on this?
Here is the thread: post #1
Quote: Well geez! I looked back for answers to see if I missed any but I'm usually on my iphone and sometimes it's hard to search back on it. I find if I hit it wrong it zooms back to the top of the page! Then, as I mentioned I changed my profile picture from my Polish with my boy I got from you and was going right past my own posts in searching for any responses! Thanks for answering me again!![]()
This is seriously gross! Glad it didn't explode all over you! I pulled some eggs out from under a broody and put them in a plastic bag to bring in the house to eggtopsy and one exploded in the bag! Sounded like a gunshot and made a horrible, stinky mess! SO glad it went off in the bag....makes me sick thinking about how it could have went!
OMG, those are so cute! The markings look like little owls!
Quote: You have some crazy broody hen drama there! I would love to see some pictures...![]()
Quote: I confess that I have been using the thumbs up feature incorrectly. Thanks for the intended usage definition, I will use it that way in the future. I meant to quote the person who posted the definition but missed it.
Quote: This reminds me of a quote that I try to live by... take advice from someone who is in the place you want to be. I too try to make an assessment of someone's experience before following their advice. Oh, and after having a baby I have gotten TONS of unsolicited advice. Sheesh, don't even get me started about breastfeeding tips... if one more person was going to suggest the football hold...![]()
Quote:Love it!![]()

Um, can I "grocery" shop at your place???Seriously though, home-grown lettuce is so much better! And I love all the varieties to choose from. The lettuce taco shells is a great idea.![]()
I read your great quote earlier and searched back to find it. I almost want to print and frame it in the house! My aunt died of uterine cancer, my cousin and another aunt had breast cancer, my brother died 5 years ago at 40 to cancer.....my daughter has taken a very serious committment to feed her family in a prevenative way she's so afraid after watching her uncle die. I hope to have time to do more then our chickens and garden. In the last year I have had 2 cancer scares and am waiting on a biopsy as we speak. I'll admit I'm afraid of the diagnosis.....after watching someone go through cancer...it's just horrible. I have two very close friends with breast cancer right now....both of them are in their late 40's! One is bald right now and the other is preparing....OK, I'm going to go back and read the fasizzle post and LOL and then go see my chickens....oh, and put the hatch in lockdown! Life is happening right now, no need to dwell on the schedule!
I was getting a little sad thinking of all the bad stuff and thought here I am worrying about what my time schedule might be for this life and I'm not living it. I'm glad it touched you. Every once in a while I say something worth reading the novels I write....I just never learned how to tell the short version!I read your great quote earlier and searched back to find it.
