California - Northern

Yikes, that's a shame. I have lots of spare roos that can be had for little to nothing.

This is my hatching egg list, so it would include most of my breeds.

Golden Campine
Isbar
Heritage RIR
Lakenvelder
Black Copper Marans
German New Hampshire
Olandsk Dwarfs
bantam BR
CCL
Tolbunt Polish
Serama
Silkies/Showgirls
bantam SL polish
Icelandic
Silver Campine
WCB polish
bantam Columbian cochin
bantam buff brahma
SPPR
Iowa Blue
White Leghorn
Turkeys RP & Blue slate
Quail - Bobwhite & coturnix
Call duck

As a flock defender, not too big, I'd probably go with an Icelanic or an Iowa Blue, both big enough and alert enough. I do have a spare or two of each and several of the others breeds as well.

ETA - I know some of these wouldn't work, I just copied/pasted the list (and took off the egg prices

Thank you, Deb! Would you please PM me the list with the egg prices? I'm thinking about making a trip up that way in the next month!

aww, thanks, but i'm sure they will be delivered just fine -- or i can try calling in the morning before our trip leaves & see if they can hold the box til i get back -- i was just so looking forward to getting the eggs today, and am a little worried about their viability after so many days of travel -- but only one way to find out! i'll have no shortage of chicks either way... (including the ones i also got from chiqita, yay again!)

There seems to be a theme here......dang dealers....keeping everyone hooked!

That is to bad! I love the roosters best and the wheaten and blue wheaten roosters are beautiful! :love     When are they due to hatch?

I would love to be able to keep a rooster but I don't know if I could stick to just 6 hens in case someone complains and animal control comes out.

My hatch is supposed to be on the 28th.

Good news! One of the eggs that I am incubating for Jason hatched! Both of the pipped eggs hatched but one of them is a Blue Wyandotte Bantam(I think). The Batam eggs is a bonus because I waited a long time to get these eggs.

Lets get more to hatch now!
good news lets hope for all your eggs to hatch. I had a bator malfunction. hatched 5 had to assit the last 2 however they where big and healthy so they will be fine.
More slow-but-steady progress (why oh why didn't I find a contractor to date until the coop was done?)

The back is on! screen panel in the middle to vent (storm door to cover it when needed)

The chicken exit side

insulating

First interior panel is in! woot!
Nice coop .. Chickens dont need insulation in Fresno though

Just Great ventilation the more open ( out of the wind and rain though) the better
Deb, Do you have a list of your breeds somewhere? My best friend lives on several acres on the border of Camino and Placerville and they are looking for a rooster. I was telling her about you and Jason since you both are close to her. They built a coop/run with their next door neighbor and her son filled it with a hatchery surprise mix of chicks. They ended up with one bantam cockerel that they got rid of. I don't think that they want a huge bird because some of their pullets are bantams. They do let them free range but keep losing some to a predator. They are now keeping them in the run while they are trying to determine what kind of predator is getting them. They just disappear. I gave her 2 SPPR's and a Salmon Faverolle all 3 at POL. They were their largest birds and a predator got all 3 of them at different times.
Deb has me beat on the roosters however I have 4 Crele penedesenca rooster teen chicks ( The champion of alertness) And not bad on the eyes if I do say so myself

oh dont forget White Empordanesa

I am in great one way mental debat !
I am not going to mix my brown and blue eggs in this current incubator I have. not worth it. the penedesenca take longer to hatch and the blue eggs are hatching quick. It is messing with my incubating mojo.

so should I set just dark eggs this week ?
white empordanesa and crele penedesenca or should I get my silver ameraucana's from Jerry and set them for my Olive egger project?
I really need to bump my numbers of the crele penedesenca as there is much demand plus my emp's need help too.
I would like to have a few pens of each by the end of summer..

oh the mental pain
