We have some frizzled and sizzles silkies. Those babies are defiantly pets we love them so much ! So darn cute they have even melted the hubby who's a bit upset because he approved 4-6. I have 4-6 in chicken math

I sold a couple of my chickens last week, so now I can get some new ones. I'm looking to get something fun, that lays a different color egg than the ones I already have. Any suggestions? These are mine.

I agree, you need a true blue egg................legbars, ameraucana or araucana (not the feedstore/hatchery variety, which are EE). You need a DARK brown egg, marans, penedesenca, emporadenesa (once again, don't go hatchery), a nice khaki olive egger. Then if you want to add ducks, my call ducks lay a pale blue egg, Cayuga lay gray/black egg. Hmmmm, lots of choices.

And I have nothing against feedstore/hatchery birds, I have some in my egg flock, but they won't lay the true color you are looking for.

But you need to turn those eggs over, always store pointy end down. The aircell is in the round/big end. Very important on hatching eggs and even with eating eggs. If you enter a competition where eggs are judged for eating quality, your entry will get tossed if the eggs are upside down.

Thanks!! Now I know what to look for. I didn't know there were ducks that lay colored eggs. I also didn't know you are supposed to store eating eggs air cell up.

Wow!! Those blue ones are so pretty!! Are they real EE's that laid them, or are they "wrong" colored Ameraucanas? That brown is great too.

They are EEs from a breeder here's the moms and dad haha.

yes try Candy for some blue egg laying easter eggers. you can take some of my empordanesa eggs if you want to try a dark one too.

Hey guys!! Holy crap, my chicks are here a day early....But I need to know, do I need to cover up the sand in my brooder with paper towels or something for the first couple days?

Laura - It is my understanding that chickens don't lay consistently until they're about a year old. My girls have great egg production for a couple weeks and then they get spotty with their eggs for a few days or weeks. Keep checking!

Ali - The same thing happened to me with the temperature spike during hatching. I think the incubator was at 103ish all night before I caught it the next morning and I still had a great hatch. I was so thankful I didn't have to go to work all day when they were hatching.. I would have had such a hard time leaving the house!

Yeah I actually had a spike a few days ago, but not too bad I guess 101.8 for a couple of days before I caught it. But this one CHANGED the temperature gauge itself. It moved it up without me touching it. Funny part is I thought I might have done it in my sleep!

Mine is basically the cheap version of yours lol. The wafer is not electronic so I have to turn the dial up and down. I have to intervene with mine daily. It was running great the last few days and this morning it was running 100 to 102 so I turned it down some. I just have to look daily.

Last hatch my incubator hit 104 and all my olive eggers still hatched. I am not sure how long it was that hot though.

There is a place across from Sportsmans warehouse that sells Kona coffee for 3.50 a cup. probably cheaper than driving up here but you are more than welcome to have a cup if you ever wanna come see the chicken set up. Though my Kona supply will not last long lol

Well I was worried because I had about 8 babies in there drying off. I was mad because if I hadn't been home, I can't imagine they would have done very well.

The Genesis should not do that. It is time to contact GQF and have them replace it under warranty.

Wafer is an oil filled mechanical thermostat. The Genesis has a digital thermostat and the one in yours must not be working correctly.

You know last night it was really humid in there and I noticed steam inside the digital readout window. I am wondering if it got wet and malfunctioned....

Welcome!! How old is your daughter? I have a six year old daughter (and 20 month old son) and she just loves the chickens. It makes me so happy to see how much joy they bring her. It sounds like you have a great mix so far! Chicken Math hit us hard, too. We were planning on 6-8 and have... 50? It's wonderful.
Oh no!! That is terrible! I am using mine for the second time and it seems like it is having a really hard time staying as warm as it should. I really want these eggs, so I'm really nervous. Nothing as bad as it getting that hot, though! Does it seem like everyone is okay?

Yea this is my second hatch. The first one was the free quail that came with it. This time I want these eggs too! I have a lot, but I haven't counted yet. I have been outside trying to build my coop.

Congrats Ali....sorry for the temp spike. hope you caught it in time. I was just telling Deanne that I if I ever hatch again it will be with a Brinsea Mini Advanced because I have to have soemthing that takes care of business for me

You know, I am starting to think I may need a bit more hands off model as well. Although up until these last few days it has been pretty good. I haven't done much at all.

Do you guys think it would hurt to stack a few eggs on top of eggs in the turner in a genesis 1588? Just for a few days till I get rid of infertile?

I stacked a couple on top of my turners, but the ones on top do need to be hand turned. Mine didn't move enough and one started developing sideways.

I only put papertowels down for now, because mine starting getting here early too. I am hoping I can change to sand in a couple of days.

ya, id do that. I put down shelf liner for a few days ( the rubber stuff) then when its a bit poopy I pull it off and let them use the sand, then clean.
I was hand cleaning the sand, then I got a sifter from petco, SOO much easier.
