California - Northern

My family mostly says that No. Cal. is everything north of Sacramento. Central is everything thing between Sac and Bakerfield and Southern is everything south of Bakers1field That makes it pretty simple to keep track of.

That's my two bits on the subject.

On another note, does anyone who lives in Siskiyou county have Black (NOT Blue or Splash) Jersey Giants? I'm looking for about 10-12 chicks and don't want to order from a hatchery. I could get them from the local feed store, but they would be a special order I'd have to pay extra for. Thanks!

LOL. Been here for a while, just didn't have much to say. I have a small flock, some Barred rock hens, a few mixed breed half-bantams and a trio of BLRW bantams. ....Oh, and my mom's Pekin ducks......

But I'm looking for bigger birds for eating, and while Jerseys' grow slower, I feel that they grow better than commercialized breeds. .... I'm also wanting some Speckled Sussex, just because I think they are one of the most beautiful breeds.

So nice meeting you today, Ron! Thank you so much for the sweet chickies. We'll take some pictures once they've setteled in. I named them after the borrowers - Arrietty, Eggletina and Homily

Awesome I think I will buy one of those little cheaper ones for hatching. This will save me a lot of opening and closing!
I think I will, too! Thanks for the advice, everyone. Good luck with your duck, Amy! I'm excited to hear how that goes. Mark says he could never process an animal, but I'm hoping maybe someday I could. Mark says the only way he could do it is if you threw the animal, skin and bones and head and everything, into a huge pot and in the pot it turned into steak.

Had to pass this one along. It's from cheezburger.com

That is so cute!! We have those glasses, haha.

For those of you who are getting into some hatching addictions, I jsut wanted to share wihtyou Mrheinz egg swap. it is IMO the MOST FUN swap around.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/772406/may-2013-online-hatching-egg-swap

You can swap ducks!
You can swap quail!
You can swap mixed chickens!
You can swap show quality purebreads!
You can swap.. well mostly any bird.

No one on that thread knows how to count to 6, and there are a lot of old and new people who do it. It is a great economical ( if you ship regional rate) way to get some variety in your chicken breeds and enjoy hatching.

In particular, zoo and chicknmamma, I bet you would have fun there. deerling too, but I don't think you have egglits yet. and hangtown farms( have them shipped to ron!)! Miss Molly and deb already get into tons of trouble, however :D.

I was nervous last year doing it the first time, but it was great, so I encourage people to try it. this thread can guide you through packing and shipping ( and hatching!) if you are nervous.

Ok, off my pitch, back to your original programming!

Yeah! The coop is 99% done!

Chicks are officially out of the brooder and garage! Only things left to do are to hang the chicken ramp (already made, just needs hooks), blocking in front of the nest box and main coop door to keep the shavings in, and perches for the run. The Caribbean blue/green trim color was just what we had left over, but we will probably change it to the same red that we have on our house windows. Also need to make a bigger waterer and PVC feeder. Right now they are still using their mason jars from the brooder.

And now for the best part, photos!

When they get a little older, we will have to whittle our number down to just six hens.

Wow, absolutely beautiful. I've never seen such true blue eggs from an EE before. They are generally green and sometimes tan/pink.

When all the swaps owed to be come in, that's about another 8 dozen eggs. Yikes

Oops, I accidentally deleted the coop picture, but BEAUTIFUL job!
