Went out and did chicken chores, what I could anyway.
Did not work well last week when I fed at 5:30 and woke all the birds and husband up before leaving for Medford.

It will be solid black. Splash chicks are kind of an off white look to them. Hard to describe, but kind of a white with a slightly blueish cast to them. You put them side by side with a chick that will be white and they look whiter. Birds that will be white have a yellowish cast to their down.

Example - these will be solid black chickens with a red comb and yellow legs.


I could dig around in my photo folders for a splash chick.

The ChickenQue is the annual fundraiser for the county program. There are activities and demonstrations and cakes and chicken barbeque lunch, so most of the chickens there are incapable of passing diseases.

I know disease is a major concern, but during fairs animals have to pass health checks, and quarantining (and disinfecting shoes and clothes) will hopefully protect your flock from anything that might get passed around at a show. Really though, wild birds are able to pass on many of the diseases and parasites that chickens can get, so it is difficult to keep them completely safe.

for some reason i can't edit my own post this evening, so just wanted to add: I wrote this response before seeing your posting about culling Gary, Amy -- and my apologies for making light of it, i can only imagine what a tough day it must have been for you. hope the evening is bringing a bit more ease to your heart and mind, as it really sounds like you unquestionably did the right thing.

I won't say I enjoy processing a chicken- but it is different for me when I do not name them and do not interact much with them. Gary was a family favorite from the start. He used to follow me around purring...hard to find that endearing. He was held daily. Kids could catch him and he was docile. He never bit anyone. He just liked to do the wing drop to me and over time got more aggressive. Did it to my mil's tiny dog (lol) who looks a little like a Buff orp because if his fluff. And my son. We were hoping it would go away because we just loved him like a pet. But I had to put it in perspective...would I let a dog do that? Cat? Goose? Just randomly and consistently attack anyone? I wouldn't. So I couldn't let it continue.

Thanks SO MUCH everyone for all the kind words really. I'm less weepy now. I'm trying not to dwell. There are other birds that need lovin' and I know another dandy of a roo will come along. Chickens are like that.

Broody Betty is currently trying to hatch air so I picked up some older Speckled Sussex eggs for her to sit on from Jeff. I didn't want to hatch anymore mixes from my own- they would all be half Gary's. Not a good time. lol. And I love the Sussex - they are almost as gorgeous looking as Orps to me.

I candled my lone goose egg and I could fall over in tears the gosling is still alive! I lock down this weekend. Words cannot express how excited I am about this baby goose! I pray she makes it through hatch if we make it to lock down!

I've never had such a good candle! I think the one extra day really helped . Very apperant what was going in in there. Good stuff.

Still jumping:
6 wild baby cream legbars, 2 golden Campine, 2 olandsk , 1 col Cochin , 1 bbb.

HEALTHY strong development. I am amazed at the veining and movement in debs eggs. I'm driving to the bay early June to teach an essential oils class... Dare I beg another batch of olandsk? YES, ISAYYES!!!

So, if my black chick has white wing feathers on the ends of the wing and a white blaze down the front of him/her at 5 weeks is she/he going to be black or is she/he a splash? This chick came from Blue Amercauna stock, so I guess I was thinking splash when I saw it, but it never occured to me that when they molt, it might come in a different color...

Deb , is correct. These guys are black and white but will grow to be black with slate legs

but Amy Beth you are right, there are other chickens that need lovin on and another roo will appear. I am glad you feel better.
Curly spent the night with her hatch mates and the EE that flies over the barrier to cuddle with them. Very sweet.
