I have personally learned a LOT from having a broody raise some chicks. I learned they are hardier than I gave them credit for. It was pretty cold when my hen was walking her chicks around. Even at a week old she brought them outside in the cold wind for foraging. Now they could hide under mama to stay warm - so I wouldn't push it more than a few seconds. But I saw my chicks out in the weather and they are all almost 3 months old now- so the weather isn't as nice as it is even now. :)

totally agree -- my broody has had her two chicks out and about for a few hours every day this week, since they were about 4-5 days old -- running around leaning to peck at things. they are all of 10 days old today, and seem wonderfully agile & healthy -- but definitely not staying at a constant temperature all day!

and quite pleased, my latest hatching eggs arrived by post from Davis in only a day, & in great shape -- letting them rest right now, will put them under broody #5 this evening! there are 7 birchen marans and 5 SFH, hooray!

My broody brought her three chicks out to forage when they were 2 days old. They spend all day outside running around learning to be chickens with periodic times under mama to warm up. They are six days old today.

broody #2, however, is on Day 24 with her araucana eggs, and no sign of any activity... eeps.

if none hatch, would it be okay to put a few from broody #3's nest, which are "due" to hatch next monday, under her so that she can hatch SOMEthing?

yep, unless she breaks, but I doubt she will.
Im sitting here thinking. There is some swap thread, somewhere that I did not send an address to somoe on monday or tuseday.
I have no idea what it was. I don't know if I put up pp or eggs or filled the claim....
I have no idea how Im going to find it...

Also, I brought one broody IN today because they were forecasting close to 100 here on the hill ( I think they lied) . They are about 2 days old and I was worried heat would get them. All the older chicks are sitting in the shade with mammas. They are especialy cute sitting in the area Mario wet down for the chickens under the lemon tree...

When it's hot my girls LOVE the damp shade under the orange tree. It's their favorite place.

I took the hobble off of Curly but she is still standing wider than is normal. Should I put it back on?

I set 17 duck eggs. Darn it if all aren't veining. lol I was actually hoping to weed through and remove some. I took 3 and stuck them under Betty. I have a single goose egg set to hatch Monday-ish. That means I have to remove 2 turning trays. Which means I couldn't set all the chicken eggs I needed to either until after the goose hatches or doesn't. I def need to get another cheap bator for a hatcher.

thanks -- i'm beginning to think maybe i shouldn't have loaded up first-time broodies with so many eggs? do they tend to manage better with fewer? I'm especially eyeing the dozen i just received, as they're quite large eggs (although broody #5 is also large, my second SPPR Bella)...

I would. And Betty had some eggs that hatched like 4-5 days late! I think it's because she really liked to have her 2 daily hour long frolicks (sometimes more lol).
