Is it a little odd to be getting pasty buts at a week old? I had to clean two butts today one Orp and one something else. Funny thing about the "something else" one, her tail looks crooked. the tail feathers are just starting to come in, but they are not centered for the back of her at all. I will try to get a picture of it if I can.... He/she was mad at me for washing her butt.

It is odd but happens.

Give them probiotics and no treats until it all firms up.

Yesterday I let the babies go out in two groups to a pen in the front yard. They loved it!

The Black Penedesencas are too small to stay in the pen at 4 weeks old.

The RIRs were very active! I have a video compiling on Vimeo and will post it soon.

Awww!!! All the babies are so pretty and adorable!!! With those big feet and large eyes they are just too cute.

I just bought two Australorps yesterday!! It was a birthday present to myself. Then this evening when I took my older chicks out of their cage, on the deck, and one RIR flew down below the deck, the golden retriever staying with us wanted to play with her. The dog has a soft bite but the girl didn't make it. There was no blood. Sad day. My daughter felt very bad, but it was my fault for not checking my chicks when the dog was out. Sad lesson learned. They will go in there coop this week.
Happy Birthday!! Great present :-)

the fog is back here in sonoma co, after what has felt like weeks of that hot dry wind, which has been withering all my new plants -- feels like such a relief to have cool moist air again.

and today is day #26 for my poor broody trying to hatch the araucana eggs -- beginning to think it just isn't going to happen. am inquiring about whether there are any chicks available for sale that i could slip under her...
Awww sorry Laura! Just another excuse to get some more eggs haha!

I went to our feed store which is in the heart of what used to be farm country. I asked the lady who has been there for years (maybe the owner?) is they had Corid. She told me no that she didn't know what that was. I found it in the cattle area and also in the poultry area. No wonder I don't ask them very many questions. Most of the time, it is just better to help myself! It is a good thing that we have BYC to get answers to our questions!

Remember the four Wellie chicks that I was wondering what their sexes were? I ended up with a quad! Now how often does that happen?!!! I am not sure where they came from. I got them from chiqita who got the eggs from someone.

There is someone here on BYC who lets their Buff Orpingtons swim in their swimming pool with their girls. She has beautiful pics of them swimming around in the water. Maybe their abundance of fluffy feathers helps keep them afloat?!
A quad is awesome!! Congrats!!!

I could have easily identified him as the most SFMWHITW....Super Fabulous Most Wonderful Husband in the World because it is true but I didn't want to gag you all

Seriously the guy hasn't had a free weekend in Lord knows how long and he is out there this weekend indulging me by building me a 4x7 coop that will be tall enough for my new Icelandics to roost happily and big enough to sleep oodles of new littles.

Oh and it is our 23rd wedding anniversary today...silver plated. But I think a better gift would have feathers don't you?

Laura I am sorry that you may have to give up on those eggs.

I think it's a great idea to get some chicks to go under her.

Hatchery behemoths are flying around the brooder and up to the top of the waterer. Time to get a lid on it. Compared to my hatched chicks these little girls are so big and beefy. It is hard to believe they are only three days older.

In your experience does chick size convert to adult size?
Happy Anniversary!!!

Great pictures. They're all so cute!

Well I candled and had to toss some really expensive eggs

painful! Lol. Have another batch right behind them so I will see soon how well those are. It's hard to see only 2 of my most anticipated breed in the incubator. Guess I can hope for a roo and a hen and pray they both hatch
We're pulling for you! Good luck!

So my lone gosling hatched. It's a yay and darn it all at once. She is totally alone. NO buddy. My ducklings are WAY too old and big for her right now. The chicks are like a month old just about and too pecky. I don't know what to do. I contacted a local goose breeder to see if she has anything and a friend who had a broody hatch some...otherwise we are carrying that new gosling around. I have no many things to do though. ahhh! She is so adorable though!
Aw one lone gosling? I bet she's getting spoiled to death! What's wrong with your pup? I hope it's nothing too serious!

Hmmmm, my post seems to be invisible.

We processed our first quail today.............................way easier than chickens. I hope I like them, they are destined for Cinco de Mayo dinner.
Those are so tiny and cute! They look so soft and slimy!

I am in Modesto, and everyone here considers us to be in Nor Cal. I am originally from So Cal, so when I drive home to visit, I tend to see the line at the Grapevine, too. Always breathe a little easier when we are heading north toward home. ;)
Welcome to the thread!!

Crazy broodies and hens!!!

Why oh why do hens like to pile on top of each other when there are empty nest boxes?

There are 4 hens in this nest box...two are broody. My son has started to where socks on his hands to collect the eggs

Now I have 4 broodies including 3 hens that want to sit on eggs and one with chicks.

Trisha
That is hilarious! I guess you don't have claustrophobic hens huh?

Okay, I just took all the baby waterfowl for a bath and a graze on the lawn. I need to sort through the 100+ photos I took, but in the meantime, here is some ducky cuteness for you.

One of the call ducks I just hatched out

unthinkably cute!

This is too funny. I had a similar scene. No broodies but two in the same nest at the same time. I envy you all with your broodies!!

The video is ready!

6 week old Fogel RIRs. Three of the Pullets are going to live with Lual soon:
Ohhh, Ron, they are simply gorgeous! I think I watched this video over a dozen times. I feel so fortunate to be able to have quality HRIR like your babies. May I ask your permission to post it on my FB?
