With all of the broodiness going on this spring, I was wondering if anyone has ever had or heard of a hen that's been sitting and then has trouble getting up and walking (starting around day 18-19). Can sitting cause joint problems? This is not my hen, by the way, a 1 yr old buff Orpington.

Well, my six month old Buff Orp, Punkin, displayed wobbliness she had to work out when she got off the nest during the last couple days before hatch. Sometimes during incubation she didn't get up for two days - when I realized that, I would pick her up and take her outside each day. (She brooded in the dog bed under the TV table.)

But her "Wobblies" and apparent stiffness was temporary. Now that the chicks have hatched, she is taking them outside every day and is VERY active with them.

New pictures of my d'Anver babies~ No matter what I tried, they wouldn't stay in line.

They look Great!

It is very hard to get them to stay in a line. Someone joked that they used velcro....

Thank you, that is reassuring! I will let my friend know. Lately I find myself getting stiff and wobbly when I've been sitting too long too. Use it or lose it!

We lost our first chicken today

I think we've been pretty lucky so far, we have had chickens for over a year and a half. My little RIR got out of the coop and my big dog got it. So sad!! I don't know how she got out of the coop! I've inspected it and can't figure it out.
sorry for your loss. Check that your door securing devices are not loose. My breese were getting out last month due to the clap on there kennel sliding over and letting the door open when they pushed on it. Boy were they unhappy when i figured that out.

Coop??? What coop?

Seriously it is framed is about all. I have to move it to it's permanent spot and then put the sides on. It is only 4x8, so hopefully I kept it simple enough so there are no major issues but we will see. The frame is in my garage and too heavy for me to move by myself and everyone was busy this last weekend, including me.

This next weekend I have to go to So Cal to see my mom so I am really running out of time.

get busy on that lol . If it gets to late I am sure a few local byc'ers can help
hrm, if there are a lot of 4h people maybe ill bring some silkies. It will all depends on if Im feeling motivated, it is 2 hrs away. But there is NOTHING like it here. I was feeling a little freaked out about all the quail I have ( remind me not to save stuff for people!) but mArio thinks we should just process any we dont sell and is not excited about going and selling quail.

On the funny side, I gave the second littleist cage of chicks and quail fermented feed just now for the first time. They have not tried to eat it out of the bowl, but one quail IS trying to bath in it and threw it EVERYWHERE... and they are eating it off the walls of the aquarium with MUCH enthusiam.

In sadder news, we had to cull the turkey. ON closer isnpection she had something else wrong with her legs, and could not put weight on one of them. I had een holding her to keep her legs in place at night before i went to bed, and petting her to sleep. I bawled like a baby, im not handling this one well :(.
ohh sorry about that. I miss my Royal palm turkey " Tom"
He kept eying the natives and getting out and I finally gave him up
Hi guys! Haven't been on in a few days. Does anyone else miss a couple of days and dread coming back on to BYC to catch up on all the posts? Well I do! Haha I can't catch up on all of the pages so I just wanted to say hi and see how everyone is doing!

Yesterday while playing with the basques and pita pintas I picked up a pp chick and she started screaming. She was so afraid! I think what's been happening is when I open up the brooder, all of the comfortable friendly guys come out and they get all of the attention. Although I make a point if grabbing and holding the ones that are too afraid to leave their brooder, I obviously haven't been doing a good enough job. Poor thing acted like she'd never been held.. And they're two weeks already.
lol yeah probably the breed. Penedesenca are like that too especially partridge , wheaten and black
