We lost our first chicken today
sad.png
I think we've been pretty lucky so far, we have had chickens for over a year and a half. My little RIR got out of the coop and my big dog got it. So sad!! I don't know how she got out of the coop! I've inspected it and can't figure it out.
I am sorry. It is always tough.

She's so beautiful, and she looks like a good momma! ALL the pictures of hens with their chicks on here just bring out the best emotions in me.
I know exactly what you mean. Can't wait to have my own broodies! With SPR, PR, Dorkings Iclandics, and SS in the brooder/egg/near future I will probably have a whole coop full next spring. Then I will be making egg runs over one hill or another to pick up hatching eggs from you all.. It's another thing to love about this hobby, there seems to always be another level to which you can take it
thank you both, so much -- i don't have an incubator, but have put all five remaining eggs under Frances, who tucked them right under her along with the four araucana peepers -- only hope i wasn't too late!

edit: adding a picture of Frances with one of her foster babies -- such a good girl! i am sprinkling some chick crumbles in her nest, so she won't have to get up...

You are so talented with the camera and she is so dang pretty. Thrilled that I will be getting SPRs later this spring!
New pictures of my d'Anver babies~ No matter what I tried, they wouldn't stay in line.

Velcro is a good idea . That middle one is adorable!

Excitement Excitement and Excitement! On Saturday I am making a trip to Just Struttin Farm and adding some Icelandics, an OE and a SFH or two to my brood! Chicken dreams are coming true!!!!

nice. Icelandics are great but hard to contain. They like to roost in the trees . at the top of the trees that is

AAARRGGHHH! Not so CUTE right now! I put out my older chick who's turned mama chick to the hatch after her, so she could get outside a bit, but she was chirping because she wanted her chicks so I grabbed two of the most feathered chicks and put them out with her. I get in the shower but leave the door to outside my bedroom open so I can hear them and I hear this peeping that's really close and look out the shower and here's the mama chick! She could have gone the other way and got to her other chicks so I'm wondering why she's come into the bathroom and where the chicks who I put out with her are. She's peep, peep, peeping at me so I get done with my shower and go looking for the chicks. I hear a loud peeping coming from up by the coop....then I see my "cute springer" laying with a chick, licking it! I yell at her, she leaves the chick, I pick it up and continue to look for the other one. I find it in the bushes and put the two back with the rest. Tonight everyone seems OK....I guess she only licked her (she likes to lick everything)!

Oh and I spent $70 at the vet yesterday, getting the foxtails out of her ears and tonight when I got home she goes off running around and I go out to feed and she dropping her ear and shacking her head! Do you think the vet will give a 2 for 1 in 24 hours, foxtail removal?

sorry for your loss. Check that your door securing devices are not loose. My breese were getting out last month due to the clap on there kennel sliding over and letting the door open when they pushed on it. Boy were they unhappy when i figured that out.

I am so sorry!

They can manage to get out of Nest boxes to sometimes. It might need a lock on the lid.

Thank you! The lid does not have a lock! Maybe that could be how she got out! I'll get one on it tomorrow!

What kind of hen is speedy? You have pretty chickens! Good mommies. I'm looking for a couple that will sit

Speedy is a cream legbar. and thanks!

so here's yet another question, for those with experience having multiple broodies/hatches at once -- i'd been assuming (perhaps naively -- this is my first-ever hatch!) that the mamas would stick with their own babies & not be interested in the others -- but this evening one of Speedy's new hatched-today chicks got close to the the bars of their exclosure, and Eleanor (who has two two-week old chicks of her own) either tried to attack it OR pull it through the bars toward her. I intervened and got the chick tucked back under Speedy, but now i'm concerned: with multiple moms and hatches all jumbled in the same space, are they likely to squabble or go after each others' chicks? i don't have the space to keep all five hatches separate (i do have one other exclosure, but there isn't room for five), and i'm hoping to keep them integrated with the rest of the layer flock so they don't have to be re-introduced later -- but i don't want them hurting each other?

Chiqita said one of hers steals the chicks from the other hens! They call to them trying to lure them away......

Chiqita and Amyfamily, sorry about the losses. It is hard for me even when it is one of my difficult hens, I can only imagine how hard it is losing a turkey

We had a golden ret. bring us a very wet parakeet years ago. It got away from the neighbor and ended up in our yard with "Niner" taking care of it. Our current pound puppy cuddles robins and jays that fall out of the nest. Glad the chicks dignity was the only thing damaged.

I averted a tragedy here today. The heat lamp burnt out on the basques this morning, no problem I've got a spare right. When I got back from DD's ortho & dentist appts. it was 106° in the broody. They were all way down at the food end but still to warm. We almost stopped in town to feed the pigeons, that field trip is good for an hour at least, if we get pretty ones it can be much longer.

Love the Momma and baby pictures. My little bantam is glued to her 6 eggs, hope giving her bantam eggs works better than the lf chicks I gave to another bantam last year. When the adopted chicks were 2 inches taller than her she was done! When 2 of the 3 sexed pullets started to crow I was done with them too!
