Not only do they try and steal chicks, but they adopt chicks that do not want to be done when mamma is ready to go back and lay!

Of my 4 broodies that sat together ebony list all her chicks to sparkles and pancake finished early.

So sparkles and Josephine who are brooding together ( 3 d time co brooding) have all the chicks left! They range from 4-5 weeks to about 3 weeks. But no chicks or hens were harmed in the process. I bet they will sit together at night and fuss at each other the first week however.

My 2 broodies on the porch are co brooding and still accepting chicks weeks later. I gave them some 1 week old chicks tonight to go with the older d'uccles and they were very happy. I imagine they might not mother these for 5 weeks but I doubt I'll have silkies that long.

I love silkies!!

Internet misunderstandings strikes again!!

Our little serama nutmeg is obsessed with getting inside. She is too small to open the dog door ( praise the chicken gods) so she waits for me to go in or out andflies in screaming like a tiny kamikaze pilot.

We may have to get her a diaper..

Okay, I just took all the baby waterfowl for a bath and a graze on the lawn. I need to sort through the 100+ photos I took, but in the meantime, here is some ducky cuteness for you.

Why oh why do hens like to pile on top of each other when there are empty nest boxes?

There are 4 hens in this nest box...two are broody. My son has started to where socks on his hands to collect the eggs

Now I have 4 broodies including 3 hens that want to sit on eggs and one with chicks.

We lost our first chicken today

I think we've been pretty lucky so far, we have had chickens for over a year and a half. My little RIR got out of the coop and my big dog got it. So sad!! I don't know how she got out of the coop! I've inspected it and can't figure it out.

Just be careful moving a eggs around, that you know the day the egg was due....I did alot of swapping between 4 broodies, lost track of the due dates, opened an egg to eggtopsy and the chick was still alive!!!!!!!!!

And I 2nd that broodies steal chicks! I had two hatching buddies and one stole all the chicks. The other broody would give up but took the back seat. We called her the look out because she did all the guarding but the other mom wouldn't let her too close. She was the last to spot hanging with them.

Oh and I spent $70 at the vet yesterday, getting the foxtails out of her ears and tonight when I got home she goes off running around and I go out to feed and she dropping her ear and shacking her head! Do you think the vet will give a 2 for 1 in 24 hours, foxtail removal?

If you have problems with foxtails...Best to check her over for them every day, and every time she's gone off somewhere that has a lot of them. My personal dog has the nice short coat that a lot of working BC's have, so she repels foxtails and all that...But my current foster dog has the irritating "show line" type coat and I had to spend a long time picking 20+ foxtails out of his fur after a trip to our property. But, that's better than having them get into his skin or needing a vet to remove them.

Sounds like your dog wants to play momma to the chicks!

I can't believe how fast these chicks are growing...I swear that just yesterday they were only little balls of fluff! Now their wings are almost fully feathered, they have little tails, and oh my gosh they're just growing so fast.
We're finally going to start the coop this week, tomorrow we go to buy materials that we still need(have most of it). Mom works out of town 3 days a week, but on the 4 that she's here she does not work, and I do independent study for school, so we pretty much have all day to work on it on days that she's here. We've already dug out the area for the coop/run, because we are putting hardware cloth underneath it to prevent digging animals from getting in.

And this little Light Brahma is not so little any more.
I feel kind of bad for her, all her sisters can fly up to the little roost I made for their brooder, but her small wings can't carry her fat little body up there!
You can see that Nelly does approve of having a "sheep" on her head.

New pictures of my d'Anver babies~ No matter what I tried, they wouldn't stay in line.

They are adorable! I'll get a pic of my babies later today; think I ended up with 3 girls and 3 boys. Of course I think the only brown one is a cockerel lol.
