I stopped adding .50 (or discounting .50) if they returned the carton when I found I could buy them for .07 from one of the sponsors here, The Egg Carton store. You get nice, sturdy cartons that talk about small farm chickens and you don't have ratty old cartons that are embarrassing to put your pretty eggs in.....and you can pocket the .43!

Thanks! That is good to know. 7 cents is great, they charge 5 times that at the local feed store. I have been reusing the same manky cartons for months for our own use and hadn't thought about a paying customer giving me yucky ones to fill. I like this idea.

The EE girls hatched 4/24 any thoughts on eventual coloring?? I looked at ears...or attempted too are they supposed to be white or is a yellowish color an indicator of blue eggs? Funny how the two on the ends appeared the same coloring when I go t them but now they are clearly different. The one in the middle I am calling Confection because she looked like a Bon-Bon two weeks ago.


I hatched these mutt red layers gender guesses? That is Curly on the right. Demonstrating balance. 8 days ago she couldn't do that without flopping over on her head Deb check the feet! YOU made that happen!





This shows Curly's feet better, her Sumo stance and that, whereas she once was smaller, she has now caught up.


No idea how you get a larger group shot with them all in frame and looking at you. I do think that whomever said Velcro is on to something.

Last night while watching TV with a couple of the chicks the little SS DH was holding did the Poo stretch and sure enough. She is the most skittish of all of them.

CA Grey flew out of the brooder onto the other one and then decided to sit on a bookshelf. She is easy to catch and though she likes to fly she like me and yogurt too.

I think you'll have quite the variety of shades of brown/reddish. The wide type markings on your EE. They turn out quite pretty. I'm glad that Curly's feet came around, good job!

Thanks for the reassurance re Curly. Seriously her toes were curled all the way back to the back of her foot. It's the coolest thing how quickly she responded..5 days to flat foot

no sign of any comb on these EE girls yet so I am optimistic. Not sure how many I am keeping of the EEs I am getting an OE from Deanne on Saturday. Maybe I will keep them all till they get to POL and make my choice then.

we are doing a coop shuffle. How do you all decide about housing. We will have 3 pens. My brown egg breeds are Delaware, Australorp, Red Star, Plymouth Rock andIf Curly is a pullet she would be in the mix too. My White Egg layers are Ca Grey, Icelandic and a couple of future Dorkings, my colored eggs will be the EEs and the OE.

I have a baby rock cockerel and by the end of summer I will have 3 - 5 pullets Part, Choc and SP so I am going to put them all together in the Rock Yard

In another Pen I will have my Dels and My Del Roo

I was thinking of putting the white and colored egg layers in pen 3 and splitting my remaining brown egg layers between the Del pen and the Rock crew. Since I am not doing a real breed program does that make sense?

I was also thinking of putting the broody breeds together hoping they will inspire one another to set but after reading about Laura's drama and worries I think spreading them out might be wiser.

Am I over thinking this?

All are LF none are known to be picked on breeds. My polish/dorking isn't showing any signs of a crest and is full of P and V so no worries about that one at this point.

Ya I think if you're not planning on breeding any whatever you want to sinus fine. I have my layers in one pen and my other breeds all in their own pens with their Roos

The only thing i'd add, is hens form cliques and friends. If they are not mean to others, I like to keep friends together. Broodie girls will inspire each other, So its not a bad idea, you can move them once they have chicks if you have space.

Speaking of broodies, Onxyia broke, got too warm for her. But, one of my Marans hens is 9-5ing with sister comb ( floppy combs sister) . I'm worrie they are going to kill all the eggs they have trading them, that is what happened to the eggs under the turkey and icelandic.

Has anyone incubated peas before? I had someone contact me about it and was reading up on it. They said your best bet is to put them under a broodie hen for 7 days then try the incubator, but also said they wanted to be turned 5x a day, and I don't think our bator does that...
