Happy birthday! Hope you got to do something fun, other than fussing over chickens (which is actually quite enjoyable when they are behaving themselves)! Also Howl/Ninja are both excellent names for a little black Japanese bantam!

One of our chickens, Howl (a Black Japanese Bantam), who is nicknamed Ninja, has been spending her nights somewhere other than the coop. I caught her before dusk and shut her in last night, but two nights before I couldn't find her and same with tonight. But tonight our sweet little Tuck seems to have followed her.

He's one of my favorites - sweet little Quail Antwerp roo. I sure hope he shows up tomorrow morning. Those two are buddies with my very favorite, our bantam frizzle, Lefty. Lefty will be so sad if they don't come back! He looked so lonely huddling by himself in the corner of the coop. Also, it's my birthday. I don't think anyone told those rascal chickens.

Here's a picture of the hen at 6 weeks, she is 8 weeks now:

Last night I was going to bed and noticed something in the middle of one of the dog's backs, in her hair. It looked like a chick poo. On closer inspection, it was a slug crawling through her hair.

I took her outside and flicked it off. If there had been chickens around, there may have been a treat for them, LOL

I had an ex-BF (note the ex) that would freak out if my dog touched his hand (ewww, dog slime), but when we went camping he would pick up and kiss a banana slug. He used to be a kid's camp counselor and that was his party trick to impress the kids with the ewww factor. Notice I said Ex........................."you'll kiss a slug, but my beloved dog can't touch you with her nose?".

This was the eight bin stage, plus about 400 eggs still in the incubators.

WOW! This gave me a flashback, I used to be super into reef-keeping and had a living room like this only with fish tanks! That really does look like mahem, thanks for sharing! And what a wierdo ex-BF, I would prefer dog kisses over slugs anyday.

They are girls, from McMurray.

One more question... we were thinking of using clearroofing on the coop since it'll let in a lot of light, is there any downside to clear roofing?
Or would white be better because it reflects heat and provides shade? (It gets REALLY hot here)

i've got white poly-carb roofing, and it's fabulous -- lets in the light/glow but not the hideous heat in summer, but also allows things to feel lit and cozy in the winter...

happy happy birthday!!! *balloons, hats, whistles*

I forgot to add tonight's picture of the babies... here are 9 of them squeezed into one next box! I like to think of it as a big pile of chickie love! I wonder how long they will keep this up... Sorry for the dark picture but the flash was washing them out.

Do they carry the Freedom as well as the Natural ?
Hello,

Yes, they carry freedom. The feed store calls it the natural lay pellet, but the label says Freedom. They also have the Freedom Chick starter but I bought the last 4 bags today. Sorry. The prices were higher today. They Freedom is now 21.99 from $19.99. Darn, will the feed prices ever stabilize? Every time I go to the store there is a price increase. Urg...
