So is it pretty much a for sure that chicks are boys if their combs are turning pink at 3 weeks? Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with the for sure Roosters at this age? Will anyone take them? Or do I have to wait until they are bigger?

Where has everybody gone on this thread? It has been really quiet for a week or so......
I just keep my little cockerels here in town until they crow or I should say until their crows become too loud and obnoxious. Then I take them out to the farm where they live until they are big enough to process. You could try putting them on Craigslist. I have rehomed a few that way. It helps if you have cute pics of them!

It was a busy week for me so I've been keeping up with reading but not posting. DH and I worked 2 weekends on our quail pen/grow out pen and are still not quite half done. His birthday is this next week and he requested that we garden next weekend instead of working on bird things.

Figured out the problem with the pictures and it is an iPHONE problem. Yup that's right! I said iPHONE has a problem. I recently switched to iPhone about 6+ months ago and I am not that impressed.

Anyway, back to chicken stuff.

Here are the first pics I took this weekend. This is already several weekends in to it. It probably took me about 3 days for the framing.

This weekend I added the bottom

The back

and the sides.

Now I am going to work on the poop board and the roost. Then I need to get the roof on and the doors and the hardware cloth around the bottom and then I could probably move them in. That means I have a lot to do this next weekend. I could probably move them in without the roof because it is closed with hardware cloth, but that seems odd to me to leave them out there like that without the roof on. I will be adding on to the run after they have been moved outside.

After I get them out there I will work on some other ventilation and I am trying to figure out how to make the nesting boxes that stick out the side of the coop. Anyone have instructions on that? I can't figure out how they are attached.....?

Lol I would have to wait for the pretty pics. I don't find chickens pretty until they a quite a bit bigger past the awkward stage. If you need any extra roo's, you just let me know! I deliver!

OH, and do you think it is pretty sure they are boys if their combs are pinking up already? Or is it maybe just a different breed thing?

You know you hatch too much if your temperature gauge isn't working so you just test the egg on your cheek to see if it is correct! Lol

Yeah my cheek isn't that sensitive.

LOL!!! So did you end up with a little Cream Legbar cockerel?

Lol. I can never get my mothers iPhone to do anything. She is a Mac person but does not buy a new computer very often so nothing syncs. She can't even get Google calendar pushed to the phone!!

That is off topic. I don't have any idea on the nesting boxes. My hens prefer large spaces so they don't usually lay in boxes unless its the neat rollie kind they can be taller then everyone else with.

I think we have a fair few people in school or working at schools who might be away for end of year crazieness but I miss them too!

YEAH! Progress!!! My pen grew into a monstrosity! Somehow, when I gave the measurements to DH, I didn't really comprehend exactly how big it would end up being! I just wanted the 19 bobwhite quail out of my spare bedroom ASAP! Now, they have a nice big pen outside and are very happy with it! It is funny but they are not as skittish as they were when they were in the inside brooder. We worked all afternoon yesterday on the doors to their pen and they were calm even with when we were drilling screws into the structure. I may end up keeping a male and a few females for breeding. I love the sounds they make!

Once you are not looming directly over them they calm down. Before that they are clear you are trying to kill them!!

Okay, this brings up a question. My phone is up for renewal at the end of July. I'm trying to decide between an iphone or a Samsung Galaxy or ???. I would value hearing opinions on the matter.

They are curious little things. If I add anything new in one end of the pen, like seeds or berries, they all come half way across the pen with their necks stretched way out and stare at whatever the new thing is. DH left a yellow screwdriver in one end by the waterer and it was funny to watch them give it the eye. Monet wanted to get rid of them but now she is starting to like them!
