on my fb page someone asked how hatchery birds that go broody compare to non hatchery for their motherliness. I told him I would ask you guys. We didn't feel the quake but we are west of the Sacramento Valley. Chiquita glad you are OK zooeemama thanks for commenting on Curly. I think his life may be easier as a roo than as a hen so that is good news. Hysterical story of where you were when the quake struck! Check out my Ca Grey girl. She likes me. She was on top of my head one time.
I think hatchery bantams are more likely to go broody then lf. Most lf have leghorn in them so they lay more and that seems to preclude broodieness. But my 3 hatchery silkies I got because someone did not want broodies birds. 3 out of the 4 were fairly broodies , and sparkles is of course the broodies queen. However even I comparison to regular silkies they are pathetic egg layers. But my experience with hatchery birds is limited.

None of my hatchery hens have gone broody. It is rare for Hatchery Large fowl to go broody.

My wife cracks up every time I tell of Vw stories on hwy 101. I worked in San Rafael at Yardbirds for a few years and lived in Petaluma in the mid 90's.
I called it VW alley.
You see I have seen every aspect of a Vw from normal to one that had blown up. ( no one hurt I believe)
usually they where broke down on the side of the road but sometimes on it. Once one broke down in front of me. Once one caught on fire in front of me. Numerous times they where on fire on the side of the road. They must of made alot of bugs and busses or they all worked there way to the north bay lol
Yeah that bug has a history. I drove to Los Angeles with 4 friends to visit a high school friend that had moved there. I had my car parked in their driveway while I left in someone else car. Unfortunately, I was blocking another friends car and when they tried to move my car without a key, they crashed it into the side of the house taking out a chunk of the plaster.

The next day, I lent my car to another friend who drove it to Westwood. Unfortunatley, the idiots tried using the wrong key to start it and stripped the ignition so they had to leave my car parked in Westwood for the night. Unfortunately, that happened to be the same night Daniel Lee Young decided to drive down the sidewalk killing 1 person and injuring 57 others. It took two days to get my car out of the neighborhood which had become a crime scene.

The two broodies that I have had have both been hatchery large fowl. My Black Australorp came from Ideal and my Blue Langshan came from Privet. I have yet to have one of my pure breds go broody. My Australorp is great at sitting on the eggs and wonderful at taking care of the chicks for 4 weeks. She is head hen so she integrates them into the flock then at 4 weeks, she is done. Last night she went into the coop and roosted with the rest of the hens. Her 3 babies went into the dog kennel like normal but mama wasn't there. I put them into one of the nest boxes in the coop. This morning, they slowly came out of the coop but ran to mama when they saw her. She is tolerating them but not going out of her way to find them treats, etc. I'm nervous about them being on their own. We had a pair of Kites hunting in the neighborhood yesterday afternoon. They are small birds of prey but I'm sure could carry off a 4 week old chick.

Oh pet I forgot! Yes they all look like Orlando's offspring. He is a proud papa.

I also forgot to mention I fond ugly boy a home!! He went to live in Petaluma yesterday with 2 double blue genes ee boys. The 4 week old chicks he had been watching are still looking for him. He was such a good foster dad he will do great with his own flock. The combining of Iggy and Louise genes made a temperamentally perfect rooser-...

Thanks! Casanova is probably headed to the farm early. He started crowing before 6 this morning and crows almost non-stop for 20-30 min. He was driving my DH crazy this morning! I'm going to try catching him early this evening and keeping him inside for the night. He's a smart guy! He goes into the igloo early then hides under the big girls.

Good news about ugly boy!

Good Morning everyone!!!

My hood popped up and smashed my windshield in early rush hour traffic in the carpiol lane. I had to pull over blind and going 70.
I am so glad you're ok! How scary for you.

Got some eggs in the mail today. The packaging was great, and they air cells are only a little wobbley.
Congratulations! Thanks for the packing pictures.

We think we just felt an earth quake!
I didn't feel it in Concord! But then again, my head was a little fuzzy last night.

I totally just sat down to pee and it shook the whole toilet! lmbo! Next time I'll just hold it and see to the animals first. I have never ever ever in my life been on a toilet that moved. Like ever. That was the weirdest thing ever.
I love your stories. You always have such great descriptions! hahaha Glad you didn't fall of and hit your head.. that would be one horrible funeral story! :p

Got home from a BLARG day at work.
Trudged out to feed the critters.
Checked my two broodies. Found a smashed eggshell under one, but no chick. Darn. Just the way my day's going.
Gathered eggs, & decided to check on the broodies again. Heard the faintest peep....
Hm. I picked up the broody that had the smashed shell. Nothing.
Then her wing peeped. Was so surprised I almost dropped broody, chick & all. She had tucked the chick tight under a wing.
She's got 4 more buckeye eggs under her, so I'm hoping for more by morning.

My day is much better now.

That is too funny! I probably would have freaked out and dropped her and the chick. Congratulations on the new chicks!

I am trying not to laugh because I know earthquakes can be terrifying, having experienced AND worked in 9-1-1 Centers during both the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes..... But ... <*giggle*> that's a rather vulnerable position and location in which to "ride out" an earthquake.
My mom was a 911 operator for 20 years. That must have been so busy for you to deal with all of those calls during those times!

One of the little Jaerhons that I just got is over the top agressive towards the other chicks. He seems to be obsessive compulsive about pecking at their eyes. I already have one chicks with a bloody eye and another with a bruised eye. I have never seen such an agressive chick. None of the other Jaerhons seem agressive so I think it is just the temperament of this one perticular bird. When I realized he/she could not live with the other chicks I considered culling it, but then I decided to stick it under a broody to see if she can teach it some manners. I kept in in a warm bator by itself all day and now it is in the barn with a very happy momma. I will be interested to see how this turns out.
I hope your aggressive chick calms down! I have one that is obviously a cockerel who pecks at the others. He hasn't caused any injuries but I don't like mean chickens! We plan on culling him (even though he is so nice to humans!) Good luck!

Wow, that is sooo scary. Glad to hear you are okay. That happened to me on the Bay Bridge when I was in high school. I was driving a VW bug and the hood flew open. Problem is... on the bugs the hood is the trunk so my clothes went flying all over the bridge and like a couple of teen dummies, my friend and I ran out into the lanes to get my clothes. Dummies.
OMG I would have died! I already have unexplained-anxiety going over the Bay Bridge. If that happened to me I would never cross it again! Pretty funny that the teenage mind only thinks about clothes! haha

Yes, we felt it big. I can't believe how long it went! My chair started moving and I first thought it was the puppy hitting my chair but I heard her in the kitchen and I looked at my husband and said "it's an earthquake....and it's still going...and still going" I couldn't believe how long it went!

My son called and said it took him three times to get through, it kept saying all circuits are busy. I thought it was kinda cute at 32 he still wanted to call his mom! Both my kids were freaked out. My daughters husbands a firefighter and she loves the excitement of it all but she didn't like the earth shaking at all! Of course her husbands on duty.

Hope everyone was just rocked and nobody rolled.
That's so sweet of your son to call and check on his mama!

Cute chick! Are you going to keep Curly? I'm glad to hear he is doing so well!

At the ranch Sandy lost half of her hens to coyotes :-( Hope they are ok! And what a nice mom to make sure they are integrated before ditching them! haha

Woohoo! Congrats!

Quote: I didn't feel anything here either. No reaction from the four dogs either, so it wasn't just me not paying attention.

I have an exchequer leghorn chick that is the same way. All it's aggression seems to be focused on one chick. I see it chasing it around and trying to peck all the time. Fortunately they are in a large outside pen and lots of other chicks to dart between for distraction.

I've driven past them a million times. Our favorite place to camp was Bodega Bay and we went there at least twenty times per year.

Quote: My original get back into chickens birds were HQ hens. A bunch of LF girls, I frequently had as many as four girls at a time determined to be broody. I was constantly pushing them off the nest and telling them to get back to work. Now with collecting 4-5 dozen eggs per day, it doesn't bother me so much. And nine of those girls have moved on to new homes.

Glad you are okay Chiquita!

I have only had 1 hatchery LF hen go broody at 3 1/2 years old. I have a bunch of broody breeder stock though! Currently 3 of them are broody.
