Does anyone know how to perform bumblefoot surgery? I just found out my hens have it and am freaking out. I don't have the resources to go too a vet and get treatment, and know it can be treated at home, I live in the Bay Area, Oakland. Anyone willing to help out?

Zoowema on this thread has done it a few times and linked some videos. I bet she won't be on over the long weekend but maybe someone has a link. It seems to be treatable.you could start by soaking her feet in Epson salts.

Welcome and I hope you get more info.

I was thinking the same thing, Zooweemama knows how to treat it!

Bumble foot is usually a staff infection, so when one gets it others can get it too. Does Oxine kill staff? What about Litter Life?

I hope the bumblefoot heals up ok for you!

A week ago, I had a full incubator with 30 shipped Langshan eggs and 4 eggs from my birds at the farm. None of the Langshan eggs developed and 3 out of my 4 eggs went into lockdown. 2 Bresse chicks hatched today but the Langshan egg pipped early this morning and has not done a thing since then. It had some liquid come out of the pip site so it may have died before zipping. I am giving it until tomorrow morning and then I'll break a little more of the shell. Anyway, I only have 2 chicks and I am looking for a few more to keep them company. I am doing a staggered hatch so there are more Bresse and Langshan eggs that will hopefully hatch in a couple more weeks. Does anyone have any brand new chicks that they are selling or any due to hatch in the next 2 or 3 days? I'm really not that picky about breed as long as they are large fowl.
:-( I hope you have a fun trip around NorCal! haha

Plank passes Friday night. She had enjoyed an extra month in the sun and seemed content until the last day or so.

I was going to send her in to davis but she would be quite old then and I'm thinking I should just bury her. No one else had masses so I don't know that I would learn anything useful from it.

Rip little plank, she who love to sunbath while completely rigid and freak me out.
Sorry to hear you lost her. She had a great home with you! (and an amazing name)
I culled the little silver chick yesterday. Now I have 4. as long as I have a few hens in there I am ok. Today I move the black penedesenca and the easter eggers to the new run. My coop is not ready yet so I will have to put a temp. setup in there till next week. They are all just growing so fast there current setups are not working. Plus I have to move the u of a / Ron's black pene rooster he gave me and some empordanesa to a bigger setup. looking forward to it though as It will make it so there is one less run/area to feed and water in the morning. Only half my new run is covered however which is somewhat concerning up here as I ran out of poultry netting half way through

pictures WILL follow once all are situated
Sorry you had to put that one down. Can't wait to see the end result of all your hard work!

Yes, I have one that is not thriving. I will have to take care of it this morning....

Sorry Ron :-(

Holy things I can't say on byc.

The off switch on the incubator heater broke last night. It was up to 104 this morning.
I don't know how long it was but the eggs were very hot. Th older eggs are probably OK because one chick hatched in there from a 6 egg so it was not killing everything. But I bet the eggs I set for a customer and the eggs I got from juststruttin last week are toast.

Mario pulled the whole incubator apart and is fixing things. I have 2 incubators tetrised out the wazoo and all my carefully seperated eggs by breed and line for my new blood marans stock jammed into one hatcher.
Eek!! They may still be ok. Don't give up hope!

Kim dropped off some eggs from her SG Dorking Hen that had no eggs develop. This time they all developed!

Kim did something to get fertility up....

I candled a couple and made a movie.
So cool Ron! Thank you for taking the time to video that and share with us! And once again I am reminded that I NEED that Brinsea candler! The pics of your new chicks are adorable!

Ron is the king of car dealers.
ERM candlers. But that is a funny autocorrect.
Hahahaha

I've spent my Sunday making a chicken death list :-( 2 more cockerels to pick out and then my parts over. Johnny will do the culling. Ugh!

Boywonder - welcome to the thread! I'm in Concord so not too far from you. Sorry to hear you're having issues with bumblefoot. Stick around the thread because everyone's right, Zooweemama may know!

Thanks for the support guys!!! I too hope Zooweemama can help. I love these girls so much, I just wish I knew about bumble foot beforehand, it caught me by surprise. But I know my girls are troopers, I'll definitely be sticking around, it doesn't look too bad atm, but i'm watching them very closely! Anyone know how long they can carry this for?

So I came across this video showing how to cure bumblefoot, and he used soap mixed with water, put it on the infected area, put some cotton on top it then covered it up with an elastic bandage, video is here

would this work?

Bumblefoot is a staph infection caused by a puncture, like a sliver that gets infected. It is not transmitted to others in the flock.

Here is a great video on how to do it.

The Staff that causes bumblefoot is in the environment, so they do not pass it on, but others can get it if they break the skin on their feet. If one gets it then others are more likely to get it.

If the staphylococcus can be killed where they walk they will not get it. I was wondering if oxine could kill it in the dirt.
