My new Crele Pendensenca's. So now I have 2 OE's, 2 Empordanesas, and 4 Crele Penedesenca - the last 2 were late to hatch.

I'm thinking 2 girls and 2 boys? I have one that is really dark, and that is reddish brown, and two golden brown.

I've had a rough week, but been thoroughly enjoying everyone's chicks, ducklings, coops, and stories, so thanks for the pleasant distractions!

My 7-year old Italian Greyhound was diagnosed with acute kidney failure last Tuesday and given about a month to live. Apparently her kidneys are congenitally abnormal, but up until very recently her bloodwork was looking just fine and no one had considered doing the expensive ultrasound that they discovered the abnormality with. I "rescued" her from a backyard breeder on Craigslist 4 years ago, and I'm a bit curious how much the woman knew and didn't tell me. Regardless, I've been doing all sorts of research and trying everything to extend this little dog's life. I just can't imagine coming home and not being greeted at the front door by a wagging tail! I know you're all chicken people, but if anyone has had a dog with kidney failure and knows any tricks, I'd love to hear them.

In chicken-related news, I've been awakened early the last two days by predators in the backyard pestering my chicks! (They're about...3 months old and fully grown, so not really "chicks"). Yesterday I heard some clucking and peeked out to see a cat in the yard, which my tiniest Sebright hen was walking TOWARDS with murder in her eyes. Kayle is the pluckiest little thing, honestly. I sprinted out to intervene in pajamas and underwear, clapping and yelling. Good thing none of the neighbors were up early to see! This morning I heard my chickens complaining before I even let them out of their coop for the day, and kind of rolled my eyes as I peeked out the window, thinking the chicks were being a bit dramatic for 7 am. There were two MASSIVE crows hopping circles and flying around the coop, totally terrifying my babies! Of course, I had to run back out and chase them off in my pajamas again. I swear, if there is a raccoon or a snake or something out there at 7 am tomorrow morning, I won't even be surprised. It's just been that kind of week.

Go look at Young living essential oils. They work GREAT on dogs. Look for kidney and renal support

can you get a better pic of the medium? may be a boy

congrats

I have not looked up the Pen as an auto-sexing breed. I have heard they are. All the auto-sexing breeds the girls are darker. And general rule of thumb on the auto-sexers. Chicks in question are boys, and cull them. They will dull the auto sexing abilities in the line.

I would guess 3 boys and a girl. The color looks a lot like my Gold Cuckoo Marans.

so sorry to read about your dog. for what it's worth, my chickens have been chasing my three cats, all renowned predators (sophie particularly specializes in birds), ever since they first started going out of their coop, when they were about half-grown. i realize your sebrights are small, but i'm willing to bet they could fend off a cat. i was a wee bit worried about the cats again with all these chicks wandering about with their mamas now, even as small as just 4 days old, but the cats have learned (from the mamas) to steer clear.

They don't slip on it?

I put a layer of pine shavings and DE on top of the lino to minimize poop sticking on to the floor. They don't slip at all. The lino is textured and I think that most lino is that way so we people don't slip on our floors. Our coop is raised about 3 feet with the run and an outdoor brooder area underneath it. DH built 2 big drop down doors on the one side and we just open them up and use a hoe to scrape out the shavings. We usually clean it out once a week (takes about 10-15 min) but sometimes we just add pine shavings and more DE to extend the time a few days. I had visions of using the deep litter method but somehow DH didn't understand what I wanted. I was working when we built the coop & run. I would come home from work and things would be built but not exactly how I wanted them to be built. Oh well, he was doing most of the work so I had to pick my battles. We have been spending the last several weekends working on a quail/grow out pen plus an aviary area for grow outs. It has grown from a simple pen to this huge thing, The bigger pen was my idea. Hey, if you are building one pen, you might as well build a double layer one to allow for more birds, right?!!! But the aviary area has grown beyond my vision. Don't you know that 8 foot walls are easier to build than 6 or 7 ft walls?! The quail and chicks are happy but I'm exhausted! I'll post pics once we finish the top. Now, DH is talking about redoing the coop! Maybe I can persuade him to just build me another one!
