California - Northern

I have 6 Jaerhon chicks, 5 girls and a boy...if anyone is interested. Possibly more, 5 eggs still in the nest. just PM me.

I have also heard that Pepsi makes a great rat poison....(makes you wonder if we should be drinking it.) Just put out a few trays...a couple of cans doesn't cost much, and it will not hurt the other animals....worth a try.

From my limited hatching of the Crele Penedesencas, that one does not look gray enough to be a Cockerel. The dot is not what you look for.

Jason is the real expert though.....
the light makes it hard to see. I have noticed a few with grey on the wings that where boys. The nice thing with crele though is you will know within a week or two

Yes, I have one of those with the lighter color that turned into a boy. He is in Guinda now at CapayValleyChicks place. Thanks Kim!

Yeah! Classroom chicks are done hatching. The stress over the darned incubator has ended.

Started with 21 eggs. 19 went to lockdown. 14 hatched. One died after hatching from what was probably mushy chick syndrome (I think that's what it is called). So, it was either a 74% hatch rate if you count the chick that died, or a 68% hatch rate if you dont. We're going with the 68%.

I managed to get two videos of two different chicks hatching, so the kids thought it was pretty neat. One chick hatched on Tuesday during school, so they got to take turns watching it then, too.

Other teachers suggested replacing parts of the incubator, but the teacher I work with was having none of that! She independently researched incubators and decided on a Brinsea incubator. She's going to try for the larger one if the school can scrape together the funds.

Did your class win? Congrats on the great hatch!

I haven't gotten percentages from the other classes, but we did get a "wow, I can't believe you guys got 13 chicks!" The other teacher hasn't said much, but she did seem a bit wide eyed with astonishment when I caught her looking at the chicks today. I think they are pretty happy if they get 50% or better... without any deformed chicks, which one teacher has had many of, apparently. :(
Keep an eye on the brinsea Facebook page. That is where they post the refurbs. You could see if they donate to schools too....
Will do. I don't think they give them away, because they have several 'school kits' for sale on their website.

Exciting news! What a special thing for kids to see! I'm excited each and every time I see a chick hatch! Each one is a miracle!

My biggest problem lately has been rats. They are very bad this year. I finally have them under control now.....
Yuck!

I have been having trouble with flies. Even with a trimmed rear, my English Orp had to be put down last week due to maggots in her rear. No prolapse, no wounds, and they aren't on the vent - they are to the side of the vent and at the tail. She even laid an egg 2 days before, so it happened super quick.

This week a welsummer that never gets a poopy butt and is a separate coop and run from the Orp had maggots in her butt. Hers was caught early enough that I'm able to try to heal her. Took 2 days to get all the creepies out, but she's healing nicely now.

In 4 years of raising chickens, I've never had this issue. I hear it's rare. Lucky me. Now I'm paranoid and flipping everyone over to have a look.

They can have all of my squirrels that they want! They are big, fat and healthy critters who manage to empty my fruit trees of fruit before it is ripe enough to pick. This year, they ate the cherry blossoms off of my huge cherry tree so we ended up having less than 1/4 of the cherries that we usually get.

I'm with you - dang tree rats. I'll happily give mine up.

As for nipple waterers, I have the Chicken Fountain. It is wonderful!
