California - Northern

Most of yesterday's hatch, (so far) - 34 golden campine, 2 OE (BCM x araucana), 1 lakenvelder & 3 serama. A few chicks are still drying in the incubator, a few eggs are still pipped (they were due today).

Why do I keep singing - "one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong"?
hahaha who is that the Lakenvelder? Craving campines....all in good time has become my mantra!

Cute story: Well I hope you think it is cute, I did.

When Curly was ready to go into the brooder I separated him just behind a barrier in the same brooder. An EE, my biggest most beautiful one whom I called BonBon because she looked like chocolate kept flying over the barrier...at 5 days old.. and snuggling with him and the other littles that I rotated in and out of his part of the brooder.

Then they were separated when I took down the barrier and moved all of the larger chicks into their own brooder.

Now all of them are out in the coop and I noticed that BonBon...now Bonnie is Curly's protector. She hangs out right next to him and when she does wander off she makes sure that if she sees me or one of the dogs or hens she rushes to his side. She is only 4 days older but over twice as big. I am going to try to get a picture for you...it's very sweet!

I literally had just taken them out of the incubator.  When the hatch is complete (about ten more chicks or so), I'll probably split them into two bins.  I try to keep them around 25 in a bin.  I only keep them in bins in the house the first week, then they get moved to brooders/pens in the workshop/shed.
Oh I see. Ya mine seemed to like being all together but they were a little too rough on the new ones just coming from the incubator

So cute!! They look like cheetah colors almost! Congrats on the awesome hatch!
Great, so I took off the day old leg bands (like braces rubber bands) and set them down for one second, well the chicks ate them. Do you think they'll be ok? There were 3 little bands
I think they'll be fine. They usually snap off when they get too small and I've seen them eat them a couple of times. Shouldn't be a huge issue as long as they don't keep doing it too often!
Holy hatches guys! haha I see pic after pic trying to catch up!! Congrats! I'm all done for now. I hatched 16 ducklings - 1 Pekin, 4 pure Appleyards and I am clueless on the rest but they are adorable lol. I hatched 7 Cream Legbars - 3 boys/2 girls - my Broody, Betty, adopted them. She hatched 2 Rhodebar boys which are re-homed when she weans. (I mean I found them homes) My little Sizzle broody hatched 2 Speckled Sussex. My 2 baby geese are doing well. My Buff Dewlap African is stinking HUGE at 5 weeks. Already about as large as my hatchery Africans that are adults lol. My hatched loner African is sweet as can be and a lot smaller. They are very bonded. I am having a hard time finding an organic replacement for Flockraiser OR a corn free replacement for it. Anyone have any suggestions? Our local feed stores carry squat for people like me that are trying to move that route. I am not anti corn- but I prefer organic corn if I am going to have it in my feed. My duck eggs are selling like hotcakes now. Took like 6 months! And this is AFTER I re-homed several of my hens because I was getting 16 eggs a day and I couldn't handle that many. Now I am going to run out this week since I am down to 8-10 a day. Kicking self. I might hatch again in July- some more ducks. Not sure. I'm all over the place sorry. I feel rushed- I have a few minutes to post then have to go do some yard and housework lol.
Wow you've been busy! It's great to hear from you! Dang it - I want ducks!!
