Chicks are also so much fun to watch. We call it "Chick TV" and it doesn't require a cable bill, much electricity (light bulb works) or even a TV, and you don't have to be over a certain age to watch either (although being able to focus your eyes does help). In a bit, when you get your first broodies you will find a second adorable channel - called the Broody Channel, its like Chick TV + the Learning Channel ... Just try to stay with one the first time, having too many is nerve wracking.

My housemates would call my baby chicks an underage peep show! Their brooder had a window that we could watch them at chick level, and it was pretty hilarious watching them fall asleep on their feet and fall over!

Hey you humidity pump users.....I have a stinky bator and I only have one egg that looks like an early quitter. I don't see any reason for the small. No cracked eggs, etc. When I locked down I noticed the white sheet that the water goes on had a black spot where the water is going in so I replaced it but it has the same thing in just two day. I finally ordered the Oxine and I've read somewhere that some have put Oxine in the water in the humidity pump but not sure how much to add. I think that would stop the stink and what look like a black mold growing on there.
I buy distilled water for my humidity pump, I add 1/4 teas. Oxine to each gallon. It's worked so far. I add Oxine to tap water to put in the bottom of the hovabators to use as hatchers.

I up the Oxine to 1/4 teas. to a quart of water to use for disinfecting. I haven't killed anyone yet with it

Shouldn't have a problem if you are using distilled water

Now when I use my Genesis to hatch in, I use distilled water with Oxine because of the stinky mess while hatching. It really keeps the smell down for a less disgusting clean up after the hatch

It seems that the Classy places allow chickens while places attempting to be classy will not let you have chickens....Backwards?

That is Yreka for you. Trying to keep up with the other big cities yet never realizing they are headed in the wrong direction. So glad it actually passed and we can have them now!

And that is only because of you! You should post the link to the hoopla so everyone knows what you went through and how long you waited to have chickens. :thumbsup

For your reading enjoyment.

where is the best place to buy feed from. The closest place to me is Jones feed then I would have to go way out to Hawes or Shasta lake or that feed store out on Desutes rd By the taco barn.

I'm just using tap water. How much Oxine do you add? I'm not sure why I have the smell this time. It's not horrible, just not like the other times.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this website. Just became a chicken owner for the first time two days ago. We live on the coast near Mendocino. We have four week old chicks. Growing up, I had always wanted farm animals. Horses, chickens, etc. now that I am in my early forties, things are finally lining up. We are out in the country, and have plenty of room. This website has been a huge help. I was freaking out when the chicks would fall over asleep while walking and they looked dead. Hahaha I'm like a nervous first time mom again!

Welcome to BYC and the best thread out there :)
