California - Northern

I set up one of the misters today and will get the other one running tomorrow. I will also get shade on the pen with the Blue Egg Layers and Crele Pene pullets.

For Woodland, it will be 98 tomorrow and 100 on Sunday.....

I'm just using tap water. How much Oxine do you add? I'm not sure why I have the smell this time. It's not horrible, just not like the other times.

I think the directions say to use distilled water so you don't get mineral buildup. I know it is a big problem here since we have well water. I think molds can affect your hatch too :(

We attached to the water district last year (oh ya, I have an extra $30k sitting around) after having a well. We don't have the mineral build up and the worries that are attached to owning a well, but geez they put a lot of bleach in the water! Anyway, the instruction say either way and I've read here both ways too. This is my third hatch in the Brinsea w/humidity pump and the first time to have this smell. I've read that some have added oxine to the humidity pump. Was trying to get a quick answer but I'll do some searching, they're due tomorrow.

Believe me, I know black mold can effect the chicks anyway...lost 1/2 off the pricy BCMs I bought. Sent the last one to UCD and came back as black mold so I want to get some oxine in there. I'm new to Oxine and haven't had the chance to do the calculations and recalled someone posting the amount they add to the humidity pump. All but one egg had moving chicks, the ones I could see in, and has lost the correct weight as of last night

I used old pennies in the lockdown water for my last hatch. I had fuzzy mold after the first two hatches but not on the last one, I guess it helped.

I will try to get an update this afternoon on my pair of broodies. I couldn't break one, I really didn't try that hard, and another joined her. Together they have about 16 eggs, 3 chicks have hatched and I never know which one I'll find them under!

I assisted the first chick and gave it to the OEGB that was sitting on duds. At two days old the chick is big enough to stand up under "Moms" wing and look around.

I currently have 7 broodies, but 3 of them are air setting. I haven't figured out a good way to protect the chicks from the rest of the flock.

just a note. If you want a incubator check out uniqueincubator.com

my R-com was a bargin they shipped quick and gave me a few quick pointers

thanks for the link -- i am toying with the idea of getting an incubator (after hanging out on this thread for nearly a year, how could i not?), and this one looks fantastic...

random item: my oldest chicklets had their first birthday this week! actually, the two SPPRs are probably the same age or maybe a week older, but Cheryl wasn't sure of their hatch date when i got them -- but the two cuckoo marans, the first chicklets i got, were hatched on May 27th. so happy birthday to dixie and ethel -- i got them a new bag of organic cracked corn as a present.
