Thanks for the input on shipping and the encouragement to keep looking for a home for him and his Icelandic flockmates

Hot is right! Kim I feel for you with no AC. We never had it when I was growing up and ugh!

can you stand another Cockerel or Pullet photo session

This is little Ray I hope he is a pullet.

There is a comb and it is more pink than yellow but it is small. Your thoughts??

Sorry to repost this but....I was afraid it fell victim to the bottom of the page blues

It's 110 in the shade, on my covered deck. 89 inside with the swamp cooler running (we have no AC). Which is why I snicker when people talk about their chickens needing AC.

Almost all the chickens are panting. Not excessively so, I don't think. Ron, your Penes and UofA's look about the same. Panting a little, but ok. I have a feed pan of water in there because it's easier to refill. One of the UofA's likes to stand in it. Smart bird, that one. I hosed the sand down in there, but maybe they would prefer a pool.

The most comfortable are the chicks/youngsters running around on the lawn under the mulberry trees. And the broodies, they aren't panting. Weird.

The youngest chicks in the stock tank brooder were panting. I put in an ice pack, which they are standing on. DH put a fan in that coop, so hopefully that will help.

One of my older Dork pullets died this morning. No symptoms, no panting. She isolated herself, didn't want to go in the coop last night. Seemed fine, otherwise, then just died. I didn't have time to take her to Davis but everyone else is fine, other than hot.

Thanks for the update on the Boys out there!

All are fine here too--Power was out from 6:30 to 10 this evening for us. It just came back on so I am catching up with my Peeps. I need to go get the incubators back onto regular power. They have been running on the car battery backup.

Kim, you have three SG Dork chicks to replace the one you lost today! It was probably congestive hear failure for that one. Sorry you lost her but it sounds fast and she had a the good life out there in Guinda.

The other two eggs are pipped and one is zipping. Great small hatch! and perfectly on time.

I think ray is a pullet. I really like the colors too.

I woke up this morning(hot) to all five of the hatching eggs from Kim's SG Dorkings hatched! They look like little clones and will be hard to tell apart.

They are very smart--They were eating and drinking within five minutes of hitting the brooder.

I have pictures and a video that I will share after it is ready on Vimeo.

good morning! and good luck everyone with the heat today...

good news here: the new pens are finished!

the original coop is on the right -- new structure has two 8x8' pens, back to back -- there's a divider through that one big henhouse, & a mesh divider on the bottom half. this was a simpler design, but in retrospect i may regret it, as the lefthand pen will probably be much wetter in the winter -- perhaps i can use it primarily for broodies or breeding, and so won't use it much in winter? or i can always put up a tarp/canvas covering for the side exposed to the SW, where most of our rain drives from. it still needs some perches and eventually some laying boxes, but for now, they are great spaces!

and here are the new residents of the righthand-side pen:

the two silver campines, getting settled in -- they are apparently 3-4 months old, and SO graceful and lovely!

I have a broody Marans girl and then 4 days in a black sex link decided to join her! Well they're crowding each other out of the box. Whenever the Marans goes to eat or drink the BSL jumps in her box! I have been on patrol for a day and a half trying to keep her out of there. Anyone have similar experiences?
I have 3 in one . they are notr seating on eggs. I put the eggs in the bator.

Tomorrow i will kick them out and close the coop during the day. will be to hot today but should only be 85 here tomorrow with a chance of thunderstorms

It is hatch day here, too! It started yesterday with the Bresse. I have 2 hens and one lays a light brown egg while the other one lays a cream/white egg. I have their eggs separated in the incubator. All 5 of the brown eggs were hatched this morning but none of the 4 white eggs. One white one is partially zipped but hasn't made progress since 11 last night and 2 more are pipped. I also have seven Langshan eggs in with them. One blue chick has hatched and another one is almost completely zipped. Poor zipped one has his hatch mate sitting on top of his egg right now!

Then out in the coop, I have 3 Langshan eggs underneath a silly broody Silver Ameraucana. This is her first time being a broody mom so I short tracked her and after she sat diligently for 2 weeks, I gave her 3 of the eggs that were at day 17. I hope that I don't regret it! She is close to bottom in pecking order but never really gets pecked because she is so fast at getting away. She hoped out of the nest box for her morning constitutional and I could hear peeping coming from at least 1 of the eggs. As soon as they hatch, I'm going to put them in a large dog kennel.

congrats to both.

Hot Hot today and a chance of showers tomorrow. though hot up here is not near as bad as the valley. shade hits the coops and runs by 3 and it cools at night. yesterday was 97 when I got home from work. Diamond springs / placerville showed 103
