I'll point out that my girls don't really 'eat' the frozen melon. I'm only freezing it to keep it cold longer in 108 degree weather. It thaws so fast, they peck at it for a few minutes then go forage, then come back and peck a bit more at the thawed layers. If I just put it in the fridge, it's hot and mushy in under an hour.

So today I had a "discussion" with a friend concerning poultry in the Basin. My girls were talking about our chicks and they said" What! You cant have chickens in the basin!"

I said "according to the el dorado county ordinance poultry are a gray area unless they violate the noise ordinance. So I can keep a rooster unless it drives a neighbor nuts. Since were on 3/4 of an acre and the few neighbors behind us are offset from our property lines its a pretty good distance away"

They said " the basin ordinance trumps the el dorado county ordinance. Poultry are livestock and not permitted in the basin unless you have over 2 acres and are grandfathered in"

I said " according to our friend at animal control poultry are considered pets until you participate in processing ,,, then they are livestock..he won't enforce livestock unless a judge tells him otherwise"

so now my husband thinks Im crazy (which is only partially true)to try breeding again, which is my entire fun in owning chickens. We LOVE to improve breeds and create fun cross projects . While in our previous neighborhood (1 mile away) we had between 2-5 roos crowing but waited until about 9 am to let them into the yard keeping it muffled until then. The neighbors were easily bribed with eggs. I think its just stressful because we dont know any of our neighboors since the only house on our street is empty but there are a few housed behind us that we never actually see the people just their dogs occasionally...

I have promised any extra roos and culls would be promptly sent to freezer camp at someone else's property. And I would limit my roos to two favorite breeds. I actually went so far as to tell him i would look into a quiet rooster.

Yes those words actually came out of my mouth. Those "Orlando " stories have me worried. 2 MILES?

My husband just said "we can't go anywhere to cool off with all these chickens. At least with a dog we can take it with us." Yet six months ago he said "No more
dogs! Go figure.

If you make a puddle for them in the run and give them a water melon you won't have to worry about the heat. It reached 110 here yesterday and my little guys were fine. They were panting and had their wings hanging but they were fine. As long as the run is shady and they have water the heat won't kill a hearty and healthy chicken. When the temps climb today grab your husband and get out a dodge for a few hours

I sold my SFH boy yesterday and I may have a humane home for two/three other cockerel suspects where they will be well cared for prior to processing.

I really would like to have a grow out pen for boys...camp Amana Deb? but that is on the someday list.

I was over on Kim's website and sort of fell for Dexter cattle and the degree of self sufficiency she and her H seem to be creating on their place. We don't have space and really we don't have time but I would like to work out a deal with an FFA kid or a 4-Her or just some rancher. We buy, you raise with feed we provide and we get the end product. It's in the works. First step is to get to where I can grow out my own boy chicks but I am not there yet.

I will actually BE at Kims later this week and am excited about it.

The flock of littles is dwindling. Down 5 from where we were yesterday I may have a lady coming to get pullets later today. Then unloading the two cockerels....chicken math in reverse!

good morning! and good luck everyone with the heat today...

good news here: the new pens are finished!

the original coop is on the right -- new structure has two 8x8' pens, back to back -- there's a divider through that one big henhouse, & a mesh divider on the bottom half. this was a simpler design, but in retrospect i may regret it, as the lefthand pen will probably be much wetter in the winter -- perhaps i can use it primarily for broodies or breeding, and so won't use it much in winter? or i can always put up a tarp/canvas covering for the side exposed to the SW, where most of our rain drives from. it still needs some perches and eventually some laying boxes, but for now, they are great spaces!

and here are the new residents of the righthand-side pen:

the two silver campines, getting settled in -- they are apparently 3-4 months old, and SO graceful and lovely!
And it starts.... 1st one, then two, then 20.... Love the new coops and chickens.

heh -- thankfully i don't have enough space for 20! and i think the Sonoma County limit for chickens is 50 birds, but i'm not anywhere close to that (yet?)

i love the new coops, too -- spent yesterday adding some details the construction guys didn't do, like perches, and hooks to hold up the swinging doors on the henhouse, and basically just watching the chickens check everything out (both inside the coop, aka the two new girls), and outside, the rest of the gang. after reading on this thread about everyone's misters, it occurred to me that there's a mister setting on my hose spray nozzle thing & so i set it up for them for a while -- most did not like standing IN the mist, but got the idea that standing nearby was a bit cooler, and when i turned it off they LOVED scratching and sitting down in the damp leaves and earth.

and what do you know: this morning we're all fogged in again. a relief after that heat! hope things are cooling down in the Sac valley as well.

Well we are on a gulch that carries noises
But I would be careful about breeds with a piecing crow.

The good thing about the gulch is no one knows where the noise comes from. They do have decrowing for roos but it is pricy. Supposed to be humane however some chicken vet invented it.

What breeds are you looking into? There are some quiet silkie roosters. And a single roo is quieter then a few who get into contests like the alum rock boys choir.

Stuffing got taken by a predator Friday night. She would not go in the coop and she was right under my window. Whatever got her snapped her neck instantly and did not make noise until she hit the ground so I was too late. It hung out in the gulch waiting to come back for about an hour but stayed out of flashlight range. This ha been a bad chicken last month or so here...

Is the Basin in a Home Owners Association? I did not find Chickens in the index when looking at the Tahoe Regional Plan, which seemed to have different rules for things based on the County.

Watch the Leghorn based chickens like the Cream Legbars. They seem to have noisy boys. Orlando was my Baby and got me busted by Animal Control.
