I'm sorry for all the chicken losses yesterday. It was really hot!! My chickens are much happier today!! I was finally able to put the fatties back outside around 10 last night.

If a Breeder is NPIP doe that mean you don't have to quarantine birds you get from them?

Ron and Kim those are great chicks!

Chiquita so sorry about stuffing

Kim I am sorry you lost one. Why do you suppose others loose so many?

I am so sorry you lost stuffing! I lost a Black Australorp this weekend. She was fine when I locked them up. It look like she just fell dead off of the roost. Already dropped of at UCD--They have an off hours drop off room there.
The Egg Farmer I am working with is going to work on them next. He has 60 Basque Hens and is ready to move on to the next Breed--UofA Blues and the Crele Penes are likely next.

The UofA blue egg layers should be heat hardy! I am happy that they really are. Are you ready for your Splash pullet?
go penedesenca. I will say the blacks I got do pant some in the bad heat. the crele penedesenca and white empordanesa not at all. I think that may because there combs are not super huge yet. the ameraucana and olive eggers not liking the last few days. today is much nicer up here. Billowy clouds in the distance.
If you want quiet, I'd develop an interest in silkies or seramas

I only know one person on here that did the decrowing, very $$$ and the roo died shortly post-op.

I have two girls in the Egg House that have been sitting on nothing for a month, a BO and a SPPR. You'd think they'd cook in those nest boxes in this heat. We fish the eggs out from under them every day. It's my group of misfit hens covered by an Isbar roo.

My funniest is a turkey hen. She has been brooding for literally months. When the turkeys get let out of their pen in the morning, she rushes to the same spot, jumps up and settles in for the day. She is right out in the sun and pants all day. I originally thought she was on a nest (even though DH moves them all into the covered pen at night), until I went to investigate.

She is sitting on an unused Little Giant automatic waterer. Those HUGE red things. So her egg is hard plastic and about half as big as she is, silly girl. Maybe she can hatch out an entire watering system for all the birds?

funny. my empordanesa just stopped laying now that they think they have eggs

I sold 5 olive egger chicks and wouldnt you know it 1 more just hatched.
anyone up here want a olive egger chick?

I also gave 3 of the 7 black penedesenca roosters away . 2 more need a home as I will grow out 3

one more thing.
I hatched some silver ameraucana from shipped eggs. one had light cross beak well its gotten worse.
chick still seems ok but is not gaining weight like the others.

I am so glad I can toss this Hovabator. I am sure the wild temp spikes had something to do with it

Hmm.. maybe toss it to somebody who wants to put a digitial thermostat in it? I never liked the wafers either. Looks like everything is there... I would take it if you are really getting rid of it - use it for a hatcher... I have a few thermostats floating around here somewhere.

Im only 2500 messages behind ! yikes!!! So sorry for the losses from the heat

It is one thing I dont have to worry about here. I am adding some new chickens ... Bantam Cochins, to my Silkies only flock. They will be here later today, cant wait to see them . A few pictures from the breeder...
