California - Northern

For those of you new to California and free Necropsy, I am posting a copy of the one that came back today:

This is the second Australorp from Cackle that I have lost to Fatty Liver Disease. The first one died at 9 months old.

Great report! Tomorrow I will get the rest of the results, Salmonella and etc.
I suspect that a hen my DH culled for me a couple months ago suffered from Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome. She was the one who was walking like a penguin for several months. Since then, I have cut out almost all corn from my flock's diet, limited the rich treats like BOSS (trying to sprout them or plant them and let them eat the seedlings), and not feed them high glycemic treats such as bread, pasta, etc. I am also feeding them Milk Thistle which helps promote a healthy liver. I bought a bottle of capsules from Trader Joes. I just open the capsules and add the powder to their fermented feed or morning yogurt/feed mix. We'll see if it helps. I have another Langshan hen who is showing some early symptoms. I have upped her milk thistle and have her separated by a cattle fence from the adult flock during the day to prevent them from picking on her.

Did he use grass out of a lawn mower/mulcher or from somewhere else? Honestly I probably wouldn't have an issue with it if I would actually mow every week. I have been a little bit of a slacker though.

Nope, they were tall grass weeds that he just cut off with a hoe. They sure loved them but it was so bad for my one OE girl.

Thank you for the tips! I may get some milk thistle for them since BAs are prone to Fatty Liver Disease.

I stopped giving them high carb treats after the first one died and definitely do not give them Corn or Soy. She probably had the problem for years since the first one died of Fatty Liver at 9 Months. Feeding them better likely kept her alive a lot longer.

I have posted warnings about giving them too much spaghetti. The closest mine get to high carbs it the left over Oatmeal and It has been quite some time since they got some of that!

You can give them liquid B vitamins instead. B12, Niacin and other B vitamins are thought to be the cause. Medicated feed pulls B vitamins, especially Niacin out of their system. Definitely get them B Vitamins if feeding with medicated feed.
Okay, where do you get just the liquid B vitamins? I have never really seen them anywhere, and of course I have never really looked for them.

Nope, not giving them the medicated feed. All I could get my hands on is the Scratch and Peck which is organic, non-gmo, non-medicated, non-cheap brand. Well I guess I could have gotten the Purina feed, but you know......

Got rid of my confirmed Icelandic boy and my suspected Icelandic boy yesterday. A colleague of mine took them and I told him that I would let him know where he can get a pullet or two. I got mine from Deann but she hatched them from eggs she got in a BYC swap so I I don't think she breeds them but I know Happy Chooks and Debs Flock both do right?
I have Icelandics, but I do not breed them. Deb does, as does my friend Mary. I breed barnevelders and welsummers.
I have heard about chickens getting impacted or sour crops from grass strands that are too long. Have you heard of that? I would gladly throw the grass clippings to the birds, but sadly my lawn was neglected a bit while I focus on the coop, so..... it may be too long.
Yes, long grass can impact crops.

I have the Scratch and peck non soy non corn. It was a free sample since The Feed Store has not been able to get the Freedom Starter for me.
Are you giving them grit with it? The instructions and the Sales Rep say you need to give them Chick grit along with Scratch and Peck starter.
