Ah, well, I'm true to type today. Am known for running down list of kids' names before (or if ever) getting to the right one

Chicken brain strikes me frequently! Thanks for the definitions. I don't imagine the chicks would mind the moths, but they get into everything and would drive me crazy. I also store nuts in the freezer and they keep fresh for as long as I need them.

The webs the weevils make in the grain can choke a chicken. Never give them weevil infested feed.

They would live eating just the Weevils though

Ohhh too cute! My big serama snickerdoodles thinks she is a mean broodies . but she likes to eat. She will rahhhhhhhhhh at me and peck at any think if I poke your hand in. I've taken to poking food in and it stops her cold to eat. RAHhhhhhh... Oh apricot! Eat eat eat....

. Next question is Scratch or not? I got a free 50 lb bag of Bar ALE Certified Organic 2 Way Scratch at a local feed store where the Bar ALE folks were doing a presentation. I still have chicks on starter at 10 weeks. And I'm quite confused about Scratch - read negative posts about feeding it to chickens. I only have 3 pullets, so the 50 lbs seems overkill even as a treat. Before I open the bag, can someone advise me on if I should even use it at all? If not, is anyone interested in this Scratch?

Cool! What feed store. Just feed it a little at a time, I'd put the rest in a big pickle bucket or something.

So, I guess I was wrong about the Cornish-X being able to lay in the nesting boxes. How she got her fat (14 pound) self in there, and kicked out my two broodies, I'll never know. I put some of the eggs in the incubator. If they hatch we'll get to find out what a Favorolle/Cornish X chick looks like.

It makes me laugh. She has been doing it for weeks. She does it to the other hens and they stay clear of her box but I found all of their eggs under her. The old under the wing trick.

Sierra Hay & Feed in Wheatland is where the scratch came from. I just finished rebagging it in gallon zip locks. Most went into the freezer. I went to a poultry session this spring at the feed store. Turned out to be geared towards larger scale flocks, but they passed along good info. Bringing home the free bag of organic scratch was an unexpected bonus.

Later I went to a local coop tour sponsored by Western Feed here in Sacramento and bought $5 in raffel tickets. The next day they called. I'd won 2 sacks of any size/type of chicken feed they carry! Got 50 lb bag of starter and gift certificate good for another bag, my choice, later. Totally amazing to me to have all this feed coming my way
