Liz I'll get you a picture of dolly! She was a rescue last year. A buff orph who will sit 3x a year min. They wanted eggs....

I have 6 egg sitting broodies right now.

Dolly as above. I'm trying to give her all my lf chicks that hatched this week.

Catalina my head hen that I'm saving for the muscovies that are hatching in a few weeks.

Sparkles and smokey blue who are sitting on said muscovie eggs. One will get all my ban ties hatched right now one will get my last scheduled hatch in another 2 weeks.

Vonnie my hatchery ee who lays xl blue eggs. I have no idea what she is sitting on but she is secluded so she gets what she hatches.

Pappa bear still in quarantine. Her flock all passed from something ( don't trust her owners vet) and I seduced her into sitting on some eggs. Owner is still in a bit of shock so I'm not sure what is happening there but I'm thinking at least she can go home with chicks so she us not alone.

This does not include the 6 hens I still have with chicks.

Pro tip: seramas are horrible mothers don't give her anything but unkillable chicks...
Oh oh, that last line does not sound good... did you manage to keep any?
Hello, everyone!
I just found this thread and want to say I live in Ferndale and have kept backyard chickens for the last 20 yrs.
Our hens are a mix bunch of breeds, with a blue maran roo.
Hello and welcome to all the new to the thread people.

I love my chickens - but I don't want to count how many years I have owned chickens .. because that makes me too old...

I got two Marans earlier this year (Blue Copper Marans Hen and Splash Copper Marans Rooster), they are very nice so far.

I will warn you.. being on this thread can make you want birds you never heard of before coming here. I used to have only Americanas (hatchery and home-grown) - which I found out are called EEs and are not a breed (on this site) so I decided to get some real Ameraucanas, then well.. those Swedish Flower Hens are pretty, and the Marans have really neat colored eggs - but so do the Welsummers and the Barnvelders.. oh and don't forget the super-broodies - the Silkies.. and, well... just don't say I didn't warn you!

Chickenmamma between the 2 of them they still have 1 chick. They even managed to drown one of my unkillable bruiser marans...

I will see if I can find the comb picture again. It's not in my saved pictures. Trying again.....Found it!
Now I see where Star Trek obtained some of their alien ideas from!
The ones I have down here at Fair (finally get to go home tomorrow night) are Pekins and Runners. I do have some young calls at home though hatched from my birds. Are you looking for calls? Actually there is a walnut comb, silkies have them. A rose comb has a spike at the back. Polish have a weird forked comb too, it's just hidden in their crest. DH took my macaw eggs home yesterday and put them in the incubator. I can barely wait the next few days until I can candle them! The hen will probably lay another tonight!
That is one funny looking bird. Keep the poof down. Lolol. Will be following your Macaw experiment.

Random thought crossed my mind looking at the Pita and Pintos

. Which are lovely by the way.

When I first started looking into chicken I absolutely had to get ones without big combs. I thought they were really ugly. Now I actually like some of those perfect tall big red combs and wattles.

Still however, I don't care for the wattles that do go halfway down their chest. For some reason they remind me if a pair of really saggy......, oh never mind.

Anyway.........Now I seem to have become less fond of the really big brain looking combs. Is that a walnut comb or something? I know I have heard it before.

Anyone feel that way or is it just me?
I love my hens with big floppy combs . It is a personal thing I think lol

"Welcome" to those neew to the thread!

I've been stuck picking cucs & beans and then pickling them. 32 dilled beans on tues and yesterday was 57 pints of dills - at least we aren't in triple digits - but it's coming again.

On the EO thread I've seen mention of a Clavell comb, anyone know what that is?

Hoping more boy quail come a calling. Maybe they will realize how good they had it.

Best of luck with the Macaw eggs Deb!

Broody update. The little egg hatched! These are four "EE" eggs I bought locally for a buck just to make sure my girl could manage motherhood. This baby came out of a white egg??!! yesterday it looked like the egg had been squashed on one side rather than pipped from inside but today that little one is out and cute and chirpy. The other chirped at me when I tapped them yesterday so this lone should have at least one buddy.

Now what do I do??

Taking a Broody poll...who leaves em? who separates? Why??

Also the nest box and the main coop have hay in them for foraging and entertainment for the big birds when they are penned up. Will that cause leg problems like it would in a brooder?

Thanks in advance for the the advice.

Welcome to new people!

I do both. Depending on where they are and how they get along with the others around them and how stupid the roos are. ( I have one silkie who things broody hens faces need love... His girls get a door between them)

But my girls free range so the non broodies don't hang out with the hens and chicks. The one time I had to lock everyone in the coop irate hens pecked some to death.

You can move them any time after she hears peeping

Are you asking if the hen & chicks should be separated from the group of chickens or whether to separate the chicks fro the broody? Observe the hen and see if she is taking good care of them, especially at night. That will make the most difference in whether you should separate them or not.

I don't think hay causes leg problems. Newspaper in the brooder can cause leg problems because it is slippery. Hay can have dust and or mold, that's why people don't use it as much as shavings. I like using hay because it gives them something to scratch through and nibble on.

skipping reading the last 10 pages. Having an emotional meltdown. I have been reading the processing support thread and was almost ready to take care of the LOUD australorp hen turned honkin rooster and LO AND BEHOLD we had a bear attack. Tore down our yard fence and busted into my outdoor brooder. gutted and left 4 8 weekers slaughtered allover the ground behind a tree. At least the Coyotes actually eat every bite!!! so on top of wrapping my brain around processing this roo with the horror of my family in my ears, i get to go clean up the babies from all over the yard. AND its a smalish bear. ugs harder to hear AND he didnt even touch the grain which tells me he is a thriving garbage bear. The worst to deal with since they are off their diet and hybernation schedule and are ruined. They do not act like a normal bear anymore. So ****** im sitting here crying.

Thanks Chiquita! My whole pen, (not counting mama and babies 5 adult hens, 4 adolescent pullets and a cockerel) free ranges during the day sometimes they are confined to their 20 x 20+ ish pen if no one is home but they are all only cooped at night. I am thinking of letting mama and baby(ies) be for right now. She has not had trouble with others bothering her or her nest so far. It would be easier to let her just stay where she is unless there is a problem.

I am sitting on my hands but want to have a peak to see if there is any action in the other eggs. Your thoughts?
