California - Northern

That IS exciting! My Australian degree is in archaeology. But I suck at languages and you need to read at least 4 to graduate so I was having an issue.

I focused on osteoarchaeology, so while I do enjoy shellfish and acorns, I usually get in trouble at parties for discussing...uh...burial practices. Sometimes pig bones! Sometimes chicken bones! Really, detailed human and animal anatomy of any sort. (But not dinosaurs. Never dinosaurs). I'm not too experienced with Californian archaeology (having been to school in Canada and England), but because I have excavated burials all over the world, I am apparently eligible to excavate burials here. And the local archaeological consulting firms seem to be in need of people who are good at differentiating human from animal bones, when all the bones are in tiny pieces and crushed by a mechanical excavator. The dig I just finished up was actually in San Jose, they had to remove a burial ground before putting in a new BART station.

Are you from Australia, or did you just go to school there? I have been to New Zealand, but never Australia! It seems like an awesome place, although I think that is one of the only countries other than the US with such high tensions between academia and native peoples where archaeology is concerned.

I feel guilty for not talking enough about chickens. My friend just moved to the country outside of Elk Grove and his family is considering getting some chickens. If anyone has any extra pullets that they think would be good "starter chickens" let me know, they have a long way to go (their yard isn't landscaped at all, and they would need time to build a coop and run) but I thought I'd see if I could get a few breed recommendations/availabilities to throw their way.

Way, way back, when I was in college, I accidentally ended up minoring in Native American Studies. One of my professors was an archaeologist. Her stories of her work were so interesting to me! I think that if I had not been a single mother, I would have chosen that field of study. GallusGirl, I envy you.

I also want to know if chiquita is an Aussie. That might explain her great sense of humor.

I have some Delaware pullets available now ( and lots of roosters & cockerels) and will have Dorking hens & pullets available later this year.

Ron, I hate to be the one to tell you, but if the two Bresse woke up then you didn't process them correctly...

ROTFLOL! I thought the same thing when I read that!

So I just called the code enforcement office for Lincoln, CA. I was thinking about moving there and wanted to see what their chicken ordinance is since I couldn't find it online at all.

They don't allow any chickens inside the City limits at all. Neither does Wheatland. I find really odd, because they are fairly rural and somewhat of a farming community.
We have friends in Wheatland that have chickens (and roosters), hogs, and goats. Wheatland city limits is pretty small. Same with Lincoln, just look outside the city limits.

Auburn city limits will not allow roosters, and some developments don't allow hens. Again, look outside the city limits. If you go up Hwy 49 past Dry Creek Road, you will find places that you can have both hens and roosters.
Quote: I'm so sorry. I know electric fencing is very effective with bears to protect bee hives.

skipping reading the last 10 pages. Having an emotional meltdown. I have been reading the processing support thread and was almost ready to take care of the LOUD australorp hen turned honkin rooster and LO AND BEHOLD we had a bear attack. Tore down our yard fence and busted into my outdoor brooder. gutted and left 4 8 weekers slaughtered allover the ground behind a tree. At least the Coyotes actually eat every bite!!! so on top of wrapping my brain around processing this roo with the horror of my family in my ears, i get to go clean up the babies from all over the yard. AND its a smalish bear. ugs harder to hear AND he didnt even touch the grain which tells me he is a thriving garbage bear. The worst to deal with since they are off their diet and hybernation schedule and are ruined. They do not act like a normal bear anymore. So ****** im sitting here crying.

So sorry, one of the dangers of having that beautiful summer weather. I'm thinking the electric wire, disconnected during the day might be your best bet.

Awww, you missed by one day. The poultry cooped in on Monday and back out last night. There were 241 birds entered. Best in Show went to a bantam dark Cornish and reserve to a BBR OEG. The ducklings were the ones I hatched from eggs I swapped for with someone on here, half pekin and half runner. I'm just happy to have someone else cleaning their pen instead of being home here with me. I can't believe how big they're going to be when I bring them home on the 29th. There will be six chickens in the building over the weekend, I'm loaning birds to be used for Master Showmanship. This morning the cavy show moved in, the open poultry show coops in on Friday so will be there next weekend.

Is anybody here going to the Small Animal Exchange tomorrow in Granite Bay?

I have decided to bring my 5-6 week old chicks that I don't want to keep (the Isbar x EE crosses, a bunch of suspected SBEL and PE boys and a bunch of Silkie Crosses (Partridge, Black & White)) to it. I have had them on Craig's List for a month and no responses. They will be $1 for suspected boys, $2 for unknown/girls. I just want to find them new homes.

I also have 4 bantam cross hens for sale - I can bring them if somebody wants to buy them, otherwise they will stay here. They are Light Brahma x Sumatra, and have tried to go broody on me already a few times so they would be great mothers. They lay small to medium light cream/white eggs.

I also have one Speckled Sussex boy, one Blue Olive Egger Boy and two Swedish Flower Hen Crested Boys (Both Blue) available. I won't bring them unless somebody here wants them.

PM me if you are interested in any of the above

I love your auto-correct, chiqita! I would think that you could discuss all kinds of taboo things at a sinner party!!! Thank you so much for the morning laugh!!!!
LOL< the problem about talking about stuff is its BORING! I bet i'd be kicked out of a sinner party faster! I personally find being a remains expert facinating and would probaly ask all sorts of questions about mouth bacteria tibia length and DNA crap if I ever cornered gallus gallus, so watch out!

I lived in Australia from 13 to 20. My mother married an australian. SO i'm not really one, but I can play one on TV so to speak...

Darn on the fair, we were going to go down to see chickens this weekend for marios bday, I guess that is not happening!

oh, you should be able to put an electric wire on the coop on a timer maybe? I think that's what the guy did. let me see if I can find the article
http://hardtocomebylifestyle.wordpress.com/2013/03/16/bear-proof-chicken-coop/

this article says once the bear gets zapped it will stay away and not have to be so vigilant on the fence

Here is one that uses baited balloons with ammonia

Several years ago they shortened the State Fair so there is less time to see it all.

This weekend, you'd only see the six birds I'm loaning, the ducklings I loaned them, my chicks/eggs I loaned them and two batches of chicks given by a hatchery for display.

That would be a lot of several years ago. I've been involved working/volunteering/showing at State Fair since 1990.
