So when building an incubator, what is the best heat source?
Flexwatt? Ceramic elements? Something totally different?

We are starting to collect for our wine fridge incubator project.

Part of the point of this is for my 11 year old daughter to budget, plan, make lists, etc. It is a learning experience for her.
She has already purchased her thermostat, so need to go from there, as the kit is not in the budget for the size she needs.
Ok, Have fun!

I was in a hurry and just stating facts.
Forgive me if it sounded that way.

No, not at all.

I don't know which is a better heat source. It looks like you need 225watts to heat a cabinet the size of a Sportsman 1502.

This has me thinking about building a cabinet incubator though....kind of scary.....

Scary!!! I'm thinking about getting a dog for protection, but I'm afraid of having my chickens killed. Right now my Chihuahua Chico is my guard dog, barks at everything at least lol.
We have four dogs, 3 of ours one of my uncle's. I know Deb has a few and so do a whole bunch of us. Dogs can be GREAT around chickens it is mostly in how you train the dogs around the birds but also in the breed. Boxers and German Shepards...and mixes of those two do a great job at alerting you and looking intimidating while also being great chicken dogs.

We have a pointer cross: Very interested in the littles but gives our big girls a wide berth a Corgi cross: too old deaf and blind to care much about anything and a Boston Terrier who is above anything so dog-like as chasing a chicken but who is also more than a little afraid of the big girls.

My uncle's dog is a lab/border collie mix and she is really only worried about where her tennis ball is.

Corgi's and any other herding breeds are great with chickens. They are super smart and quick to train. Any of the Livestock Guardian breeds would be good as well.
Of course my little 4 pounder yorkie chihuahua gets along great with my chickens.....as far as he is concerned they are little treat machines

. and my girls think he is just another chicken.

Training is always key. It takes a ton of work.but is worth it in the end.
