No, that was with gouldian finches, notoriously bad parents. This is a green singer finch. The parents raised two clutches last year and are very attentive. Mom is still on the nest with two more eggs in the clutch. Baby is already begging and dad is flying back and forth, food to nest. Of course right now he is mostly still feeding mom.

Okay, I said no chicks for awhile, I was mistaken.

Look what just hatched!

And once again for size perspective, these chicks were close to a week old already.

The Finches are amazing!

It is a good thing that Mom is gong to raise them.

That must be fun to watch! I currently have 2 mama hens with 3 chicks each. I could sit out there all day watching them!

Here's a pic of one of my pretty molting girls

My two girls, Wren and Stimpy, look just like yours. I used to think they were ugly ducklings, but now I too think they are pretty and so friendly. They climb on our laps for treets. Such sweet birds, just like yours. I am so happy now, when at the time I was disappointed not to have real Ameraucaunas. Thanks for sharing.

I don't, sorry. These are some eggs from my BCM. Egg color of course varies depending on the age of the bird and where she is during her laying cycle. There is a regular brown egg for comparison.
beautiful eggs!! What color marans are those from? I've got blue copper and splash. Much darker than my black copper I had years ago. Especially the one splash is the darkest
The top one is her daughter and is a Marans x SG Dorking. This is Maranda The egg on the left is from Maranda. The one on the right is from a Partridge Penedesenca.
Pretty eggs and birds :) blues are my favorites, and yours look beautiful!

The FBCM(French Black Copper Marans) have the darkest--8 plus on the scale.

There is a new line now--little Pedlar that is quite rare and expensive. Birchen Marans can have dark eggs too.

Deb, Sunny Dawn and Pam in Paradise are working on getting the darkest color so if you want Very Dark Marans eggs, check with them.

I have a Blue Marans that is based on Cuckoo Marans--She is very friendly and very smart. She is 2.5 years old, molting and still laying an egg 4 or so times a week.
Why is little pedlar lines so expensive? Where did they come from? Heard of the other lines, just curious :) And Deb is causing me some egg color envy over here :)

It is a new import from; France I think. It is rare so expensive. The importers are restricting who gets them. Heaven Sent Ranch in Red Bluff has them and is one of a hand full of folks that can guaranty that they are pure.

There are others mixing them with Presely Marans. I should check again since this will change in a year or so. Do not worry, they will be a lot less expensive soon.

Yeah don't get one bantam with a bunch of large fowl. Warning the mf leghorns are not great layers if you care. Pity you aren't closer everything I actually have is on your list! ( MF leghorns ee OE marans)
What?!?! MFL are marginal layers? Gimme an example of "not great layers" please...... I have two. One normal color and one recessive blackish color.

If you want a broody get a non hatchery orphington or maans in the first set you get. Those breeds are both broody breeds.

Have heard English orrphingtons are less broody anyone know if that is true?
What?!?!? You are killing me today. Non Hatchery Orps and broody? Dude! I have 3. I don't care for broody breeds. I didn't do my homework apparently. I just went for eye pleasing and nice personality.

Got a call from my real estate broker: "Come get the keys - escrow closed and recorded today. It's yours, now."

I am heading out the door NOW.

Yay!!! Yours went so much faster than mine did. I have been in moving hell for a week now. Packing and trying to get stuff done. That is why I was so far behind on here in just two days!

Two eggs 4 yolks!

Crummy pic but I was so surprised this morning when I cracked my first two white pullet eggs and both were double yolked! That makes me think that yesterday's egg was also the Dorkish/Porking girl's but was a single yolker and that is why it is so much smaller...esp after Deb and Happy Chooks' post/pics...mystery solved no food color enema required.

I am so jealous! I want a double yolk. Or even an egg......

Hey, if any of you have iPhones, download iOS 7! I'm having a lot of fun ahahaha.
What is this cryptic remark???? I just received notification there is a new download awaiting me. Is it bad or good?

Those are beautiful! I have three Welsummer pullets who have just begun laying and two of them lay eggs about that color. I love these girls. They are friendly and lay beautiful eggs!
I hope mine end up being speckely....... not all of them do. My first one that was a hatchery Welsummer had beautiful big spotted eggs and she laid at least 5 days a week.

Hi everyone sorry I've been off the grid lately been really down in the dumps emotionally ugh. I'm feeling better and just noticed that one of my EEs that I got from Candy is missing. I searched everywhere for her but gone without a trace. No feathers or blood anywhere. I looked over the neighbors fence but didn't see any sign of carnage. I think she's too young to be broody on a hidden nest. :(

I hope she turns up!

No feathers is a good sign. I have found them hiding is the oddest places.
