California - Northern

It is easier to just say the came from Ron Fogel. They are great birds regardless of their history.

Which movie?
Yeah, but some of us don't know Ron Fogel either.

It was funny to see where these chickens have been and come from. I do still love your RIR's. So many chickens..... so little space.....

The movie is Waterboy. It is a stupid Adam Sandler movie and his mother, Kathy Bates, is always trying to protect her son. So everything is the Debil...... and his name is Bobby. Some lines sort of stick with you..... you know, like.....

ET Phone Home or
Frankly my dear I don't give a ****. or
Run Forrest! Run!!!! or
Bueller..... Bueller.... Bueller

.

You know, things like that!

My Welsummer has started out strong in the laying department. 4 eggs in 5 days. Whoo Hooo! They aren't huge at 1.2 oz, but they are pretty. The Orpington still can't quite get her act together. One good egg on the floor of the run, two soft shell eggs in the poop board, and then nothing for 3 days and today a good egg on the poop tray again!

I had a soft shelled EE egg on the poop board last night too

Sent DH a text asking him to check on my girl for shells, cheeps and pancakes. I am going home at lunch to have a look-see myself.

for at least 1 SPW girl for each of us.

The older they get, the more I wonder. Are these two the same breed? I saw a picture on Juststruttins web page of a Creole pene that looks so much like the dark boy here it makes me wonder
Yes, they both look like basque. Pene are much more slender.

Penedesenca was crossed into the basque generations ago and recessive traits continue to pop up. Some of these recessive traits include: White on the Earlobe, White legs, Clavell combs with side springs.

The dark boy has white legs and should not be used for breeding. Does the light boy have white or yellow legs?

That's great! Wellies are good and reliable layers. Hope your Orps get it together soon.

I have 1 wellie out right now, 1 zipping and 3 more pips. C'mon babies!

I got 3 boys from the OK eggs, those two and a biter with yellow legs and beak. BUT I have this boy from Megan - he stays!

I'm so excited. I feel like a big girl farmer now. haha! We've been culling ducks and chickens we don't want to breed. I did figure out that my Silkie hens hatched CL X Silkie mixes. I think roos though. Boo. Now the Silkies are dead. I took all the Silkie eggs I have been hoarding and put them in the incubator. I'm not sure what a CL roo X a Silkie will produce really but I miss my sweet little girls already and hope to get a girl or two to carry on their sweetness. They will be like tiny little soft Eggers right? LOL
I have some partridge silkie/CL hens . They look like smooth silkies but they are a little thinner and had light skin and legs. Silkie like personalities, but they can see. Should lay blue eggs.

I wish that I had the time to groom my girls but alas real life is demanding! I also recently found out that I have PMLE (polymorphous light eruption) commonly referred to as a sun allergy. I try not to go outside at all between the hours of 9 AM and 4-5 PM. My doctor wants me to be wearing UPF clothing even in the house. It has been a hard life adjustment because I love being outdoors!

I saw that on FB! that sucks! but great they figured it out! I hope you can figure out ways to be outside and not be hurt.

Got my egg tonight when I got home from work. My daughter found it on the ground. I am pretty sure they aren't digging the bucket nest boxes. I guess I need to find a replacement.

They were so much louder than usual I had a feeling. My daughter came running back to me saying, " THERE IS an EGG! THERE is an EGG!"

Kids make life worth living I am tellin' ya!

If I wasn't on my phone I would post a picture, because I am sure none of you have seen an egg before.

It looks like an Orp egg because my other option is a Welsummer egg and it isn't that....

The waiting is over. I can now move on.
HUZZAH!

Oh jeez, my friend in San Jose has 14 mille fleur d'uccle eggs due to hatch at the end of the month and he asked me if I wanted any... I really shouldn't, but it sure is tempting.

On another note, OMG about the flesh eating bacteria! I'm glad she's playing sports again. Just gave myself a good puncture wound with a power drill that slipped off the screw I was holding, and that story is getting me all paranoid now. Last puncture wound ended up with me on penicillin drip in the emergency room, gah.

Said wound was incurred as I was finishing building up our worm bin greywater filtration. I read somewhere that we have to be careful about keeping the chickens away from this water (we were planning to water our garden with it and the birds hang out there). Anyone have any experience with reclaimed greywater and chicken safety?

You have to be careful with graywater for salts especially. We use our cloths washing water on the lawn, and I only found 1 soap I can use. NO borax or oxy or anything, and most green soaps use borax so cant use those. It was tricky figuring it out. We looked into using some other water, but I was worried about trying to get all cleaning fluids safe, and not being able to sue bleach, so I did not into it more.
Yes! This is my test hatch and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do things. It is actually a hatcher that can be used as an incubator. It doesn't have automatic turning so I had to manually turn the eggs 3 or 4 times/day. And now that they are hatching, I'm not sure what is the best way to add more water. I was going to run a tube through the vent hole and into the water container. But I can't see the water level through the front window and the container is 3-4 in higher than the vent hole. So I put another container on the shelf right below the vent hole and ran the tube into it. I'm thinking that it should be a little bit larger container. The humidity is staying around 58-60. It sure recovered quickly when I opened the door to turn the eggs. Both humidity and temp went right back up. I set 12 eggs from the farm. My friend had her kids collect them for me so I'm not sure if they are all Bresse or Bresse plus some farm mix eggs. 11 made it to day 18 but 2 were iffy. 3 have hatched and 3 more have pips that I can see. I'm not used to being able to see them from only one side so there may be pips on the back side of some of them. Time will tell!

try putting a thermometer/hydro on the inside of the door, that way you can see what you need to add.
*sigh*...... after 10 days on Corid, they birds still aren't quite right.

I have to send some poo in to Davis I guess. I was hoping I wouldn't have to, because it is kind of a pain in the butt finding the form, getting the right box, getting the right poo, wrapping it all up and then taking it to a drop off center! Even with Ron's help and instruction, I feel like I am not doing it right.

They are still losing weight too. I don't like it. They all act okay but appear to still be losing weight and runny poo and slightly reddish in color. Not sure if it is blood or not.........

I did get another Wellie egg though last night. They are so dark and pretty. Much darker than my last Welsummer, but the last one had more spots.

I got the second cocci medicine fro jeffers today. Im going to try the whole program on all my chicks now in an effort to get chicks who have strong immunities in later life, since it is so bad in this area.
Seriously!

And question for anyone? I appear to have gotten a CL X Sizzle (or Silkie) cockerel- now I know I don't want him at all. But would he be useful to anyone (not here but just in general)? (I am trying to decide if it's worth CLing or just culling him soon)
Since you will not know if it has a silkie gene ( if its sizzle it is only 50% likely to carry one) you are unlikely to find someone who is looking for it as a project. Id vote table bird.

Welcome all new people, welcome back all people on vacations, and huzzah for all new eggs, coops, land...... etc... Awesome pictures...

Yes, I would give up the first two boys and the biter and keep this one. Grow him out to 6+ months and if he has a nice chest and broad back use him for breeding. He is too young to evaluate his chest and back at this stage but he has potential. He has good over all color. He may have too much grey in his hackles, but its hard to tell from this photo and even if he does that can be corrected in future generation. Body type should be sought after first, then body color.
