Hello, I am in Redding, CA and I have a Silver Grey Dorking cockerel I need to rehome. He came as our bonus straight run chick from Murray McMurray this summer and is about to be 4 months old. He is growing into a lovely bird and I hope he will go to a home that does not intend to eat him.. but they are also considered to be a fine meat bird so such is life... if anyone in Redding, CA is interested please e-mail me- be sure you use a subject to your e-mail because I will need to recognize it in my junk mail! [email protected]

It is good to have you here!

He looks like a nice boy too. I hope you find a nice home for him.

Omelet finally ventured outside--I figure the other 2 will eventually...

I've got some clearing/cleaning up to do, and I should probably get something on that dirt before the rainy season starts... Luckily, I've that gravel/rubble pile in the front corner of the yard--once I empty out the wheelbarrow.

It is good to see her out!

Yes, gravel will help in the rain.

Thank you very much, to those whom responded to my questions. It was one of those " I know what I WANT to do.... But is a good idea?" Moments. I have always received honest good information here.

No movement from the basque but there is two more days.

Haha such beautiful golden eyes you have.

So in reading over information on keeping flocks healthy... " the dangers " of poultry shows and purchasing anything but eggs... I'm feeling confused ? On one hand I tend to believe most places /properties are not as clean from illness as one may believe and feeding and cleaning are key to prosperity. On the other hand there's the " bleach your shoes" group that I understand but can't "do" .
There are so many typs of illness and npip only test for some. What do each of you care to know about? How do you decide about adding to your flock aside from incubation? Aside from Merck and or Newcastle .... Do you grin and bear it and use antibiotics to treat symptoms as necessary or flush carriers and cull -starting fresh,?!?

We have never had symptomatic birds of any kind. I don't want that to cause me to become TOO carefree. But when beautiful birds become available I want to feel confident on my decision and how I bring them home.

Everyone's thoughts welcome.
You have received a lot of great advise already.

Common sense goes a long way in bringing in new birds. Do not buy from someone that has birds in poor conditions. I know the need to "rescue" them is strong, but it's almost guaranteed to be a disaster. Buy from reputable breeders. If you do purchase birds, definitely quarantine them. This gives time for any symptoms to show. You will have to be careful with your shoes and care for them last.

You are correct that NPIP only tests for certain diseases, just because someone is NPIP certified, doesn't mean their flock is free of all diseases.

Even hatching eggs can be an issue, as there are diseases that can pass vertically from the hen to the chick through the egg. MG, one strain of Avian Leukosis, and Coryza are a few. (I think Newcastle's can too, but not positive on that) Again, common sense in who you purchase eggs from.

I too have worried about showing birds and bringing something home to my breeder birds. I have not shown at this point, but more due to my kids busy schedules - at some point I probably will. My understanding is that the risk is small in showing at poultry shows. I'm sure local fairs are a bit different.

Quote: That is interesting. I know Cream Legbar crosses carry on the autosexing as well. But autosexing is a bit different than making a true sex link.

Beautiful!

Final count 1 mix chick; coal black and funny and two much more sedate SPWs...I have resigned myself to the "wait and see" attitude re sex but am hoping the news that Ron has heard that more pullets hatch in the fall is accurate.

No life in any of the three remaining eggs. I opened up the air cells and all 3 chicks looked perfect. One looked like it had begun to pip internally. I don't know what happened and she didn't give up on them until yesterday pm. She didn't leave the nest since Wed though she did have company in her nest. Harriet and Boom Boom insisted on laying there but it doesn't seem like that would have caused the death of these chicks....Like I said, the 35 for eggs was well spent since it is still contributing to tremendous enjoyment of anticipating and watching. Plus these littles are going into the new pen with mama this afternoon and I should be able to work with them more easily than her last clutch of wild hooligans! I hope I got an SPW girl for me and one for Ali if she still wants it but even if I don't it's not like there will never be SPW eggs available again.

Pics coming soon

Congratulations on the hatch!

All of those pullets will be laying eggs next spring when the rest of us are just starting to hatch and brood chicks.

Well I for one am glad you got two chicks and one breakfast out of the paid for eggs.

Hopefully they are girls, but like you said if not, it gives you something to do again, right? I am certain I have said it before, but I got the 14 eggs in the mail and 4 hatched. two girls and two boys. I am still kind of bummed I had to find homes for all the boys. It was kind of a disappointing on some of my eggs, because I had such a variety all of some breeds turned out to be boys. Like the DLBB's and the CL's.

It sounds like you have a good mommy there in Beakface.

I love that you offered any of your girls to me! That is such great thing to do!

I am just not certain I should add anymore to my 13 since I have yet to expand their pen to my only spot of earth that I own in this silly home. Literally It is a patch of dirt about 10x20. So many things to build inside yet so I can unpack that I can't get to the outside.

Those of you that have handy husbands..... you should give them an extra hug and thank them for their manlienss.....lol...... Cause let me tell you, good handymen are hard to come by. Even ones you are willing to pay.

My ex is one of those exceptionally handy men, but for some reason his girlfriend gets annoyed when he helps me!.
