California - Northern

Hope everyone survived the winds yesterday, but it sounds like we are in for more today! I am not seeing much blown around here, but we tried to secure everything before hand. Had all the leaves in the yard picked up on Monday and by Wednesday you couldn't even tell! I hope these winds at least blow them ALL out of the trees so we are done with them! LOL

I was able to get 2 beautiful new girls this week from one of the wonderful members on the group.

The older hen

The pullet (the one in the front)

The rooster I am trying to find a home for has not acted like a rooster at all until I put these 2 in the pen. He decided he was going to make sure they new who was in charge and immediately gave them each a quick grab. I threw him out of the pen for the day and the new girls got along just fine with everyone else. I left the roo out overnight and heard him try to crow the next morning! I suspect the older hens have convinced him he is low man on the pecking order so when he is in with them he is submissive. I put him back in the pen and now he is leaving everyone alone again (including the new ones)and I have not heard him crow again. Looking forward to my first blue and blue green eggs!

How far North? I am in Oklahoma now but was born and raised in Humboldt. Mckinleyville Fieldbrook area, I drew the line at SF. Anyone from Humboldt?

[/quote]Hi and Welcome! We used to drive to Eureka/Arcata when we had tropical fish, no one in Smith River had them. DH is a HSU grad. We live about 2 hours east of Crescent City now. When I was a kid I thought Sac. was Southern CA. Needless to say I grew up in little towns. OR allows ferrets.

ok, lets see if these will load this morning. I wish I took better pictures...

The wind did not hurt things at my place. It did however move a stop light out of place!

Congrats on the new breeding group you have! A recent heritage post said that Cockerels, not unlike Teenagers, mature slower then pullets. Give him a couple of months and he will be working it with the girls for sure.....

Very nice Counters!

Bye Bresse did not fly up on top of the coop or sun shade last night. One of the was out roosting on the top of a pallet though. She was traumatized at 16 weeks old and was scalped. She still has trust issues....

Nice kitchen! We re-did ours about 7 years ago and it made a HUGE difference!

What kind of bird is Celery??? Kind of looks like a peafowl here.

What part of San Jose do you live in? I grew up there and moved to Paradise in 1986. I went back a couple of times a year for about the first 15 years to visit family. It has changed so much over the years and scares me now! I am glad the family all moved away too! It was about a 4 hour drive from here.

I'm actually glad he is maturing slow. I can't have roosters here and was secretly hoping he was really a hen. I am actively trying to find a home for him (posted on Free cycle, EBay Classifieds and Craig's List), but no takers yet. I really don't want to process him, but might know someone who would do it for me if it comes to that.

Very pretty girls - and I thought they looked/sounded familiar. Chickees AM EEs are beautiful and their eggs (I have seen pictures) are too. I was really tempted to get some from her earlier this year.

You are right on the rooster - he thought he saw somebody lower in the pecking order that he could dominate but you gave him time out and he is back to low man again. I hope you can find him a good home.

Nice kitchen, very nice counter tops, I love the pink tourmaline in it. The green didn't show up really well on my screen, but I bet its stunning in person.

Bad Celery indeed. No turkeys here - they would be visiting the neighbors' wonderfully watered and lush yard instead of staying home..

And welcome to the Nor Cal thread to the new person - I agree with Pet Rock - Nor Cal is a state of mine, not a location.

I am very happy with the new girls! Thank you Chickee!

We have wild turkeys around here, but I think they all go into hiding around this time of year! I don't blame them. Wouldn't want to end up on someones dinner table either!
