California - Northern

winds are back up again here on Sonoma Mtn, and there's a bad fire north of here near Geyserville...

and in the midst of all this tumult, and the rapidly-shortening days, my silly SFH pullet who JUST started laying two or three weeks ago... looks like she's turning broody. how ridiculous is that? if i set eggs under her now, they'd hatch Dec 14 or so, a week before i head east to NY for christmas -- but they'd have their mama looking after them -- so, to set, or not to set?

(if i did, i'd be setting pullet eggs from my birchen marans cockerel & his birchen marans sibling + two marans/isbar crosses, so some of the chicks would be 3/4 marans 1/4 isbar...)

I was reading about being able to tell when a hen will start to lay eggs By how far apart her pelvic bones are? How do you measure? and how far apart will they be when she is about to start laying? Anyone know?

I just got a visual of a ruler up to a fluffy butt... LOL

My quotes are not working! Hc we are not dog experts but my cousin has a puggle. Water did nothing For his yowling. He'd start Rufus off to Rudy is evil.
Laura they should be OK as long as they can get to food and water.
Chic that's a beautiful story!
Also smelling like broody poo BAD!

Go by the age, time of year, size and color of the comb. Look for squatting and then checking out the nest box.

There is a lot a talk about measuring bones--reminds me of prhenology. That is when the Call of the hen came out.

It depends on the size of your fingers, but generally, 1 finger width is not laying and 2 or more finger widths is laying.

I say set eggs under her, but I'm weak and a sucker for Mama's and their babies. By a week, she should have everything under control.

DH said hell no, so I'm off the hook on the puppy.
