Cackle, that is unbelievable I'm so sorry for you guys!!!!

Chiqita-- that sounds great!  I've always wanted to do some sort of aquaponics to raise shrimp.  I am horrible at little goldfish tanks so it would probably be a disaster.  If you don't mind me asking, how difficult is it to maintain and how costly?

It all depends on how cold hardy your fish are. We are experimenting with having some out and some in this year. We DID put a extra heater in the outside tank during the cold spell. The whole system is a little jury rigged and frost killed a lot of our winter stuff but it's very cheap to run.

However it's been 2 years and we have eaten 2 fish from it lol.

If you want it to be warm enough for shrimp that would be a different story.

Oh! And here is a great story from today.

Starseed the single white silkie that hatched for me a week after miracle showed up got server swift wry neck. I fed them before I left to go shopping .

I gave her a drop of nutri drench and a drink of water. And freaked out at mario who since Ss is his favorite also freaked out. After about 1/2 hr of freaking out I went in to see her and she was eating and looked up at me with only a little crick.

She still wants to turn her head up a little to look around but Jim in crickets! From completely twisted backed in a corner to hrm that is interesting.

VIVA vitamins! !

so sorry to read about the house-sitting disaster! i had better luck with my housesitters (if anything, they fed the chickens too much, i can't believe how much food they went through in a week), the only mistake they made was to not let the cats out at ALL while they were here -- which was the main reason for getting housesitters in the first place!

hoping that some of your missing chickens turn up!

I am just sick. No livid. Sick and livid! My house sitters didn't do their job! They didn't take care of the chickens! I came home to 5 dead

The grow out pen was bone dry. No food or water in sight. The birds are desperate. It had also not been shut up the entire time. Kids say they found hawk carcass so maybe 7 dead. I can't look. I am so angry.

OMG, I would be livid. I'm so very sorry. Next time maybe a fellow BYC member can house sit for you.

I found a nest of 16 eggs... i float tested them and they all sunk... are they OK to eat? They were in a shady area.

Yes!

  • sinks to the bottom and stays there, it is about three to six days old.
  • Sinks, but floats at an angle, it's more than a week old.
  • Sinks, but then stands on end, it's about two weeks old.
  • Floats, it's too old and should be discarded.

The Silicon Valley Chickens group on Yahoo (svchickens) keeps a database of members willing to trade chicken sitting with each other. People exchange poultry sitting for each other, or for garden produce, and things like that. No people who expect monetary compensation are supposed to be in it.
