California - Northern

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to BYC and chicken keeping. I live in Nevada City, CA and am hoping to get "in the loop" on local chicken and farm stuff and gather some local wisdom, especially as it comes to thwarting predators. Are there any experienced coop builders or retailers in this area? Good feed suppliers? Any good Northern CA breeders of birds that do well in the foothills? We're at about 3,000 ft, so it can get very cold and very hot. I've got my mind set on Dominiques for this first batch of chicks and maybe a few blue Andalusians. . .but I'm sure I'll end up with a menagerie. :) Thanks!
Welcome! I'm near you. I agree with Jason on making it as secure as possible.

Just jumped aboard Amtrak in Fresno heading to Oakland to visit my son. He's taking me whale watching.

Cool! Take pictures!

Thanks for the welcome. I suppose you're right about the temperature. It only gets down to about 10 here, and not often. Although the weather has been so bizarre, winter feels more like Southern California with the occasional snow storm. :)

Thank you for the coop building advice too. I was thinking of chain link with something else over it to cover the big holes. I hate that idea. So ugly and expensive. And thanks for the coop builder lead. I'm still having delusions that I can do it myself, but with spring coming soon and extra time not materializing. . .I may need to pay someone to get it done.

I just went to the new Heritage Large Fowl thread and realized that @juststruttin is the thread starter!

I wish when things like this happen that the Subscriber to the thread would get an email notification. It should not be a hard thing for the autohandlers to do here.
I just set 8 black penedesenca
some crele or crele x black
1 crele for sure
and some Silver ameraucana x crele or black penedesenca as a test hatch

I read a little on the Stockton show... I've never been to any show. I really want to go! Is it child friendly? I have 6 children but would only bring the ones who are interested in going. For sure get a sitter for my youngest two. How long is it for Saturday?

I live just outside of Grass Valley.

I get my feed at Tractor Supply in Auburn. Best price for Flock Raiser. It is a good all round feed that can be fed to chicks on up through adulthood. You will need to give them free choice oyster shell once they start laying.

You need a secure house for your chickens to lock them up at night and a fenced yard with hot wire top and bottom to keep your chickens safe during the day. PM me about someone to build a chicken house and ideas on how to keep predators out. I might know someone who could do that for you

You can see that I have lots of different breeds and they all do well in hot (if you provide shade and misters) and cold. Some of the breeds with large single combs can get frost bite, so you might want to stay with pea or rose comb breeds

There are lots of experienced people on here that can give you advice based on their experiences.
