California - Northern

Karen (BYCer sewandgrow) is planning a get together at her house in Turlock in May. The last one she had was so fun! Great chicken people + great food = great fun!

I went to her Swim with the chickens party and it was very fun.

Her last post on BYC was nearly a year ago on this thread. It is good to hear that she is ok.

You know there are a lot of us that are not on Facebook so we do not have contact with those that are.

@sewandgrow

Yes I am okay, a little older & a lot slower but okay anyway. I even bought some more chickens yesterday & am going to Fresno in 2 weeks to have a vendor booth with my chicken earrings & greeting cards etc.
I picked up some Brown Leghorns yesterday from a breeder from Paso Robles to put some white in my egg basket. I have had only colored layers. I specialize in LFDP & no one has been able to come up with a white egg laying one so if I am going to go with Leghorns the colored one are at pretty.
I am going to write to Lotsapaints I miss seeing her & had hoped she would be up from Paso Robles for the show. Maybe Fresno.

It is great to hear from you!

@wolftracks has started posting again too. Quite nice to have you guys back!

Very nice picture.
cute pic!

Thanks! My housemate was practicing her photography with a dark background and single light. She made us a house calendar!
(The image I posted is a bit grainy because I didn't have a chance to ask her for the file, and just took a picture of the calendar image).

I'm sorry I didn't meet anyone!
I'm sorry I didn't get to meet more of you!

I enjoyed looking at the winners, but I also learned a lot from going around the cages and searching for the DQ's. Now I know what knock kneed looks like, squirrel tail and some other flaws.
I think next year we should plan a meet and greet at the show, have some badges made or something

I'm glad I got to meet @chiqita and @PetRock and @chrissyr ! Sorry I missed others. It was fun seeing all the birds!

Anyone ever use the farm innovations pro incubator? Look cheap and I'm in the market for a cheap backup for my eggs not shipped ones lol about 80 bucks less than the genesis with the turner and fan too

I hope to make the Fresno show since I'm so close. I'm also looking to add white to my egg basket this year and was planning on using Norwegian Jaerhon's. There's a breeder in Coursegold. What's LFDP?

LFDP or DPLF, either would be Large Fowl Dual Purpose. All the breeds I raise are that The Leghorns are an egg layer breed but wouldn't be targeted as a "meat" bird. Of course you can eat any breed. You just wouldn't get a good meat to bone ratio. My grandmother always bought straight run dual purpose breeds like RIR, New Hampshires & Plymouth Rocks. She would use the cockerels for dinner & keep the pullets for a few years for eggs & then they would go into t .he soup pot when they stopped laying well. I guess that kind of stuck with me & I do So love BIG birds........ I bought a pair of English Orps awhile back & the rooster died so I have the hen in with a regular Orp of good size. I don't want to get carried away again with breeding. I have cut down from 250 birds to about 60. This year I hope to concentrate on hatching egg sales.
