Today we found my daughters Bantam Leghorn cock dead. Last night, he looked like the picture above and we moved him inside. We believe it was from red mites. He has always been sensitive to mites, if that's possible. He would get them even when the others didn't and they were very hard to erradicate on him. We treated him for mites 6 days ago: dusted him with Sevin, treated with Revolution, changed his bedding and sprayed his coup with Sevin. He was holding his own this week and was eating and drinking. We were giving him Nutradrench. Yesterday, I retreated him as the second round for newly hatched mites. His poop was normal, but yesterday I purchased Ivermectin to give him as a last ditch effort.
Today, even though none of my other birds have mites, I will dust them all again.
We are pretty sad about the whole thing and all the effort we put out to save Hercules. If anyone has any words of wisdom, we would love to hear them. Could we have done a better job? Are some chickens more susceptible?
Aww....I'm so sorry about the roo......It must be especially hard since it was your daughters bird. How is she handling the loss? I think I will be checking my girls for mites now.
if all goes well I should be able to start collecting next week. Im expectShouts of outrage from hensemanation from the white hen any day now. Im hoping to get one more hen from the wild west sereama show at the end of feburary.
Welcome to the thread! I like your name! My dad's name is Robert and my oldest son's name is Jordan. Plus, we are Wheel of Time geeks, too! My 3 sons and I have read all of them. I plan on buying them for my Kindle and reading them again. Loved them!

The nice thing for anyone reading them now is that the series is completed. The wait for the new books was so hard! They are thick books with lots of different characters & story lines. I would have to refresh my memory on some of the people whenever I started a new book.

Interesting fact: the only reason there are ebooks is brandon sanderson! Robert and Harriet both hated hated hated ebooks and refused to publish them. I had an interesting discussion about it once while he was signing 2000 books. Brandon talked Harriet into it as a fan favor. It took like 2 years to do it thats persuasive talking.

So sorry for your loss. I recommend sending him to Davis, too. If you decide to do that and won't be mailing him until Monday, soap his feathers up with soapy water before bagging & refrigerating.
If you cannot get to us within 24 hours after the death of the bird(s), then wet the feathers thoroughly with soapy water. Keep the bird(s) in a refrigerated area (39-50 o F or 4-10 o C) if you plan to submit within the next 5 days.
Yes, it is worth it to make sure you know what killed him. It gives you peace of mind and helps to figure out if you need to do something different with the flock.
Ok...the bird is tagged, bagged and put on ice. I had to put him in an icechest, because if my husband found a bag with a dirty chicken in our fridge...that would be the deal-breaker.
Sorry for the morbidity and dry humor. It's how I cope.
