I agree 100%. Most of the time when we keep an animal around that is chronically ill, it is for our benefit, not the animals. I worked as a registered Vet Tech for 10 years and we often had people who could not bear to have their pet euthanized because they were not ready to let go. Some knew it was time but wanted us to tell them so. We usually would tell them that they knew the animal best and when they felt like the quality of life had deteriorated to the point where the animal no longer seemed to enjoy it, they would know. My feeling is that when we take on animals in any capacity, we have a responsibility to them...to do the best we can to give them a happy, healthy life whether they are for meat or eggs or pets, and when that is no longer possible, to end it as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

That's what most of the people on Facebook are saying that it is. I wanted to see if our resident expert knows for sure.

awww... it looks like a pine marten to me (larger relative of the weasel), but i don't think they have white coats in winter... or it could be a stoat (or ermine), but they are smaller & supposed to have black tail tips. perhaps an albino marten?

definitely not a raccoon, albino or otherwise... the face looks all wrong for that.

What do you think about the claws? You can barely see them in one of the pictures.

can't see enough of the feet to tell anything definitive -- but raccoons have much bigger ears & overall a pointier face -- i did a google search for "albino raccoon," and a lot of photos pop up (they exist!) but the faces in particularly look nothing like Kim's friend's photo -- whereas the photos of martens do:

albino raccoon

pine marten

and actually, it MUST be a critter in its winter coat, rather than albino, because the nose is black -- an albino anything would have no pigment anywhere (notice the nose & eye color in the albino raccoon photo)

Is it unhealthy for chicks to hatch late? Like do they get deformed? This chick hatched this morning and it's still wet and isn't moving much? But pooping?

Super ugly afterbirth?

I looked up the terrestrial mammals list for Olympic National Park, and they have both martens and fishers -- but as far as i can tell, neither turns white in the winter.

so, sorry to let you down, Kim aka @capayvalleychick -- but i'm not sure. it really doesn't look raccoonish to me, though -- and with that black nose, it's not an albino. i can ask some biologist friends, if you'd like?

Pretty normal looking "afterbirth" Not sure about it being unhealthy to hatch late. I had a few from my first hatch there were about Day 24.
