California - Northern

I am so sorry!

I had to move roosters off.

You are allowed to have chckens:

Is your property too small?
If so, try getting the council to change the Ordinance to be more like Woodland and Davis. We are allowed 6 hens not matter how large the lot is.

My property is 8900 Sq feet.

. 10,000 square feet is huge for 10 chickens!! It's crazy that they put chickens in with the "animals 75 pounds and under" So the neighbors could have 10 goats? I've left messages with code enforcement asking for an extension (They gave me less than a week to "correct the violation"), and asking to file an appeal. I'm looking into how to go about getting the code changed in the city.

Someone there may be able to help!

On roosters: i'm thinking of having a "rooster pen" and taking them out as needed. otherwise they tear up my hens. So far the Bresse boys are small (2 1/2 months) and my marans rooster is very docile. But will put them in their place. If I start now I figure I may be able to get them used to this situation. Any ideas? In my mind, it works perfectly

. Just not sure if they'll fight as the young ones grow.

@juststruttin - so sorry about your eggs. That is so weird that only 3 are doing well. It is a letdown when you order eggs and that happens.
I've been considering the same thing! I just feel so bad penning them all up when they're use to free range

A quarter acre is 10890 sq ft. That kind of puts it into perspective. There are many 1/8 acre lots with yards ample enough for 10 chickens!

How important is it that the roosters can not see each other? I have never had a problem with two roosters in side by side pens other than the normal face offs.
I was thinking of placing plywood between the pens but would rather just use wire as it lets more light in. Your suggestions are appreciated.
Here's a photo of the interior walls of my pens, while it was under construction. Plywood on the bottom, wire on the top. The roosts were installed at the top of the plywood, so chickens on the roost can see the other chickens.
I did have an issue with a couple roosters trying to fight through the wire, while on their roosts. I hung a fabric feed sack on the wire, so that they could no longer see each other. Solved that problem.

The only thing about the wire & roost position that I don't like is that I can't use these as conditioning pens. The males can break their tail feathers on the wire, if they sit too close to the side and turn around on the roost.

Greetings :) I am raising Black Jersey Giants. No stock at this time, as Debi mentioned working on getting some new hens for our Roo. :) I have met some nice folks recently in CA with Giants, there is a nice lady in Guerneville (sp?) who has a hatch currently that sounds like it is mainly cockerels mostly Blues I believe. If you mate Blue to Black you will get some Blue and some Black, they are gorgeous either way! I have sent her a link to this thread and hopefully she will give a shout so you can connect. :)
Welcome to the thread, Lisa!!!!!

Love your pens and your dog, Kim! What are the dimensions for each section? I'm sure you posted it before but it is easier to ask again rather than search!
