I have been thinking of doing some culling soon of some of my wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucanas pullets.

I have chicks hatching

2 out and a bunch of pips, so I should have lots of babies in the morning

The bad news is my Ameraucana eggs from Lark Rise didn't show up. They were supposed to be here yesterday. It appears that they are stuck in transit in Georgia due to the storm

With the new storm coming in, who knows when I will get them and they may be frozen or too old by the time they finally arrive

Best quote of the day DH: "um, do you plan on keeping the Baggie of poop?"
Me: "yes, I'm sending it off fedex tomorrow"
DH "oh " (no more questions and walks off
- I usually try not to let him see that stuff. Non poultry people just don't get it
UCD will bill you. They sent me the bill as a pdf in my email. The accounting office is one building away from me so I walked a check over to them.

They are EE's and they can lay any color egg.  Usually the hatcheries will spell it with an "i".

Here is the information on pure Ameraucana's:

I have bad tidings . I am showing signs of preterm labor this past week. (Not uncommon for me- trying not to stress) but when my husband found out about the trip he ixnayed my plans. "Going off the mountain without me AND the midwife in wood fords ! No way" He is being reasonable I understand... I just feel really bad to cancel on you. I can PayPal you a compensation for holding this week for me. Please let me know.

:/ I just candled the eggs and it doesnt look promising. neither is moving inside the eggs and if i move the egg a little both embryos kinda swish back and forth which i dont think they are supposed to do. :/ im afraid to open them now

Be careful when you eggtopsy ( when you get to it) the plastic Baggie Ron mentioned is much of importance . Sloshy is not good , you are right:-(

What a picture you just painted . So funny!

I bought 10 EEs from Privett in an order I split with 3 others last spring and they all lay blue green/green eggs..one of mine lays an almost khaki green egg...lots of grey in it. They are healthy friendly girls.

But I want Blue Blue too so I am hoping to hatch BBS Ameraucanas at some point. Mottled would be great too!

@WendyJeepchick ...I have the same agreement with my husband. No one out of the egg unless some one else goes. I did get him to agree that every broody got to sit on eggs though so I have that going for me.

@ronott1 Didn't you say you wanted Houdan There is a woman called Caitlin (sp) Pecu in AZ who has Houdan hatching eggs on the FB Rare Breeds page. She and I have been in touch and she told me to contact her and she could help me out when I am ready. Since I have a crush on Houdan at the moment maybe we could work out a deal. When I get a broody, I will order some you can hatch em and we can split whatever we get and I can give em to her. No biggee if that doesn't appeal to you.

I of course want all of them!

I was looking for a white egg layer and was going to get La Fleche. I am going to work with getting more Pita Pintas instead. I really love them as a breed.

Under what illness may they have that you can still eat the bird? for instance, if I were to put a bird down for it's time of harvest and butchered it only to find it had been sick internally as an example, would it be edible under any acceptation or shall it just be put into the compost at that time?
When in doubt, you can call UC Davis Food and Safety. I had to call to see if it was safe to eat a chicken with bumble foot. Since it was a staff infection, I was nervous and most people on BYC said it could not be eaten. I called and they said, yes it could be eaten. Apparently, chicken has lots of bacteria which is why it is important to cook it well.

My first aid kit has an ax in it and that's all. I don't vaccinate, medicate (except medicated chick starter) or do anything else to save a sick bird. Because of that I don't usually have a sick bird and the average life span of a chicken here is 9-10 years old. I have a Call duck that is 16 going on 17 years old. This method is not for the faint of heart, but I have a lot of birds and don't have the time to play Vet with them. My birds die of old age......it's a lot easier this way. They are basically indestructible. Most of the chickens were standing out in this last weekend of rain.....they have cover. It rained well over a foot in a couple days and I didn't lose a bird out of several hundred birds.

It's not for everyone, but let me tell you it will make your life easier in the end. Most of the birds I have seen 'saved" are never quite right again.......if they survive at all. By survive I mean live for more than a year.

Hi Walt,

I am just wondering, do you worm your birds? I have never wormed my birds and the few that I have sent to Davis for necropsies over the years have been negative for worms. I am thinking worms are not much of a problem in our area. If you do worm, what do you use? I would love your thoughts on the subject.

I don't worm but I would If I thought I needed to. Every location can vary quite a bit. What works for me here may not work somewhere else.

...reading your post and vigorously nodding my head up and down. Like when I told my DH not to open his favorite cooler last week because there was a dead chicken on ice in it.
I even had the baggie in the chicken coop. He walked in and saw it. I try hiding all of my animal stuff from him but he seems to find it. Like I had peanut butter set aside to fill the dog's "Kong" toy. In another room... in a cupboard. Then I walk in and see him getting ready to make a sandwich. I said "where did you get that?". When he answered, I hesitated to tell him the truth cause I knew he wouldn't like my answer. But I let him know- that was the dog's peanut butter. I caught him in time before he ate it. He was NOT happy.

Like if I put something in an odd place, that should be a clue.
But the dead chicken in an ice chest… Oh Man!! I'd have to hide that really well
