California - Northern

It's hard to know what you are looking at here but this is LC crashed out between the mirror I stuck in the brooder and a fuzzy sock that I filled with rice and warmed in the microwave. Much happier baby today and it has started eating crumble. It continues to go behind the little mirror like it is looking for the rest of the chick. Don't know if that is really what is happening or not but I feel so sad for it. Does Western Feed have Bantams?

ETA the picture

Yeah!!!!!

Yeah! I was not really planning on breeding RIRs but these birds are so big and beautiful! The boys are built like tanks! And their chicks are huge, fluffy things!
They are Kittle line and apparently Dick Horstman has been doing a good job with them.

They lay a lot of eggs too!

Ok, I'm reading being printed about once every 10 years. Might be silly to wait until 2020 to buy it,  I'm cheap but not THAT cheap!
I remember being told that they usually come out every 5 years, of course the last one took 10 years. SOP should be available in co!or and black & white. The ABA sends out newly accepted color standards and the last one has the standard for Show-offs, silver ginger and opal OEGB's, not sure if the APA does the same.

This is probably an "only in California" type question but....can I give my chickens cracked crab? There was a fundraiser Sat. The crab is left over. It is cooked and has been in the fridge

I think I would be so worried about choking the poor thing to death I would be constantly checking it. I can definitely see that it would be tough to do alone. I just put colored zip ties for leg bands on my 4 Marans and even that was not easy to do alone. A couple of them whacked me in the face with a wing.....

I set up my zip ties in a loose loop that is already caught & keep a tuna can full near the incubator. I can hold the chick in one hand & manipulate the looped zip tie around the chicks toes & onto it's leg by myself that way. I get assorted colors in a pack at Tractor Supply then use a system of different colors & right or left leg & write a list & post it on the brooder door frame. The ties are all dusty now I haven't been hatching lately & you know how chick dust gets everywhere. My new incubator should be here in a couple of days maybe by sometime next month I will be using my system again.....LOL

I bought a candler from McMurrays, but the bulbs are not very bright. I actually get better light from a small LED flashlight, but also get leakage of the light since it is not concave. I think if I can find a rubber gasket the right size to fit on the end it would work very well.

My husband made a cardboard gasket to block out all the surface of a large high intensity flashlight except a circle the size of a black PVC/ASB pipe big enough for the egg to sit on the top off. The pipe sits on top of the flashlight in the cut out circle of the cardboard & all the light goes up the short piece of pipe & the roundness of the egg closes the pipe off on the top when you sit the egg on it. It was working well when I was hatching a lot but I don't know what has before of it now. I guess we will just do it again.......LOL
