Here are a couple more links:

FWIW, I've had a couple with mild splay leg and they were able to stand, but unable to walk unless they had a towel or shelf liner for better traction.

I don't have the experience in numbers that you all do. But, I have raised 5 batches of chicks over the past year. I started using the disposable puppy wee pads in the brooder for two reasons: it eliminated pasty butt (because there were no shavings to eat) and it kept them from having spraddle leg because the had traction and didn't slip. Also, it soaked up the water when the rascals discovered how much fun it was to make a mess instead of drink.

I had something possibly exciting happen today, mostly because I wasn't expecting it. I have two 8 week old mixed cockerels that need to go to new homes, so I made a flyer to take to my local feed store. At the store, the owners vaguely remembered me and asked if I was the "lady who got the Jersey Giants". And, since I am "she", I responded "yes". Lol.

They said that they have had a lot of local interest in purchasing JG chicks and if I would hatch some, they would purchase them from me or sell them on consignment. When I purchased the JG's from Cackle this summer, this was a future possibility. But, now I'm nervous. I've never done this before. Also, this would be my first JG hatch. So, I wonder if I should try to sell them myself on Craigslist, etc. Except that I would then be spending more money on feed, etc; instead of just selling them at a few days old to the feed store. These are "hatchery" chickens and I am under no illusions that they will sell for more than they are worth.

OPINIONS and ADVISE....Please..

Also on the subject of chicks. a few have a little poo stuck to the feathers on their butt (pasty butt) what can i do to stop that
I've sprinkled a little corn meal on their regular chick starter in the past. They will eat the corn meal first so you don't want them to fill up on it instead of the feed. You may see them pecking at the sand and using that as a grit also.

It is a gorgeous egg! I was so surprised to find it in the nest box. She hasn't really been acting like she was getting ready to lay. I kept them in the pen today because of the rain and everyone was using the boxes. I am trying to keep track of what Marans hen lays what egg because I suspect one is laying a very light egg the color that my BO is laying. I was out there checking frequently and I found this one on my final trip out for the afternoon.

I wouldn't be concerned about them being hatchery chickens, that's what feed stores sell.

Would they be paying you enough to cover the cost of incubating? It would be an easy way to pay for chicken feed.

Isn't that funny, my chickens laid like crazy today too!

My GCM eggs have really lightened up now that have been laying every other day for the past 6 months. I do have one that is still laying a dark egg, but she might have started laying later than the others.

Wendy I have had good luck selling on Craigslist here. Pictures help......I would post pictures of the adult birds & type up a description of the breed & it's uses, size, egg color etc.

Mine all just started laying in early January and most have actually gotten darker. I have the one that had some sort of trauma last summer as a young pullet and could not walk or stand for a couple of weeks and I'm wondering if whatever happened damaged her "paint pot". I haven't been able to catch her in the nest, but I know what all the other's eggs look like. I am finding some that I think are hers. They are very light...not even any speckles. But at least they are also very large.
