Hi everyone! It's been too long. How's it going?

Our flock is doing well. Had to get a couple saddles for the popular girls. Ellie the EE hasn't laid yet even though she's gonna be a year old this month. Not sure what's going on with her. Looks healthy.

This morning the Hubby found an egg in one of the nest boxes that had a hole in it with the contents all over the nest pad. We've never had an egg eating problem, so I don't know what to make of it.

hello!

my mystery of the day was finding a brand-new-to-laying pullet egg in one of the nest boxes, a nice medium-brown one -- but none of the girls in that pen should be laying medium-brown eggs. the pullet that's the oldest of the bunch (5.5 months) is a splash isbar, so ought to lay a minty-green egg (she hatched from one) -- the others are probably too young to lay yet anyway (4 months old), and are another isbar, a black marans, and two cream legbars (green, dark brown, and blue eggs respectively).

it's a mystery.

I will see what I can do. I am hatching them for the Egg Farmer but might be able to get a couple of them for you. The UofA Blues will be Black blue and splash.

I'm not in a hurry Ron. Take care of your other commitments first. I just get eggcited when you talk about them. And I only want a few. I go back and forth between wanting chicks or hatching eggs (if that's an option).

I have a question. a of my hens are now a year old and most are laying other then my phoenix hens and one crested polish. i get white egggs now and then which is the polish girls but i think only one of the two is laying why arent the others laying?

I had mentioned that my local feed store was interested in selling Jersey Giant chicks if i hatched them. Instead of just jumping into that arrangement, I'm going to list them first on my local craigslist. I'm not going to ship chicks or Hatching eggs; too complicated right now. I also have a trio of bantam Lavender Ameracaunas that I will set eggs from.

400

400

So, I have two questions: are there any drawbacks for setting the JG eggs with the bantam AM eggs? Also, as a backyard breeder not a hatchery, should I vaccinate for merricks?

The Bantams may hatch earlier so hatching can run for several days. Not a problem but something to be aware of.

Mareks is fine either way. You just can't mix them for something like a week after inoculating them. They will not make the not vaccinated chickens sick.

It is of limited benefit though.

I read about a new virus that is out causing cancer in two year old hens. I expect to see a new vaccine soon for the new virus.

The Delaware hatch that I finished yesterday had 4 groups of chicks in baskets. I had to get them out because they hatched so well that they were very cramped in the baskets. Those Dels are big too.

Each time I opened the incubator, I sprayed a mist from a spray bottle. I had no shrink wrapped chicks.

It would be perfectly fine to mist them and remove the 18 hour old chicks. You can also fill the water tanks at the same time.

I am looking forward to more pictures!
I wait until my humidity gets on the verge of being too high, then I swipe chicks. I will do it if they are pipped, but not if they are zipping.

It probably just got broken. They will clean it up if an egg gets broken. Happens here and there, nothing to worry about.

I don't see any issues with hatching them together, but I don't have bantams. I don't vaccinate, so can't help you there.
