Ok. Thanks be to you all for all the info! I'm disappointed with myself for purchasing without seeing the birds (I spoke with the owner and they said they are healthy and haven't had any health problems) (I haven't had problems with chicken people being dishonest yet so I felt confident in my purchase)... But maybe I'm over reacting and they really are ok. We'll see either way. I'll give it some time and do some natural treatments on them.

this is not a fun experience!

The disadvantage of being a beginner! Or I can look at it positive and say "this is a learning experience!"
You are doing great with them. They may be fine but they may have picked up mites somewhere. Quaranting and treating like you are is perfect for new chickens coming to your place. I expect mine to go through quarantine when they go to a new place. Your place has different conditions, both illnesses, strains of cocci and etc.

They will likely be fine in two weeks.

So I think my little Orpington roo's are trying to crow.

They are only 6 weeks old. Is that normal? It doesn't sound like a real crow. More like a funky sneeze (but they aren't sneezing). Like a "phew...phewphew.. pheeeeeeww".

Yes, that is a crow and is normal. My NYD hatch had one doing that at a week old. I thought one of them was going to die!

Holy cow!! At a week old. I heard them last night, and My hubby and I started looking around, like "what in the heck is that". It took us a while to figure it out.

If they do not have a pip, consider popping a hole in the top(big end) of of the eggs--a little one with a small drill bit. Definitely if peeping is heard in the shell.

Shipped eggs often need help and it is not an indication of genetic weakness but shipping damage.

yes, i realize that -- all of my previous hatches have been shipped eggs! -- but i'm content to leave them alone a little longer.

That is a good plan. Hopefully they will start to hatch by the time you get home today.

up early to check on the incubator: all three swedish crosses are out (two blacks and one splash), and two of the campines, with the third pipping -- and no sign of action with the CLs so far. once that last campine hatches i'll take them out & give the CL eggs some quiet to think about hatching in...

I have 2 week old chicks, 28 eggs in the Hovabator due to hatch 3/9, and a full tray of eggs in my GQF cabinet hatcher that are a week behind. With all the talk about chicks, I set another tray full in the cabinet last night. They should be mostly Pita Pintas. Zoro is doing such a good job fertilizing eggs that I have a hard time not setting them. My family may start thinking about committing me!

I actually don't have any classes or meetings today, and have a HUGE writing deadline next week, so i'm staying home to work on writing and keep an eye on the new chicks!

And yet you choose to hang with us on BYC. As a friend I'll gently say..... "Stop procrastinating and get back to writing".

no need for that, i've already written about 2 pages this morning -- but a girl's got to eat her breakfast at some point, right? and it's always nice to have company with breakfast.
